Hello everybody!

It's been a little while since I posted on here [been quite busy.] This may seem like an awfully simply question, but I haven't looked at the mechanism closely enough to figure it out, and am thinking that simply asking some of you more experienced people might save me some headache, not to mention lost springs! I have a Beretta 92 FS {Brigadier version, though I'm sure that matters none in action design}. I would like to take the action apart so I can clean around the firing pin housing, the pin itself, etc [a buddy dropped the little bastard in the sand and we can all guess who's sucking wind on this deal...] Anyhow, I've got the gun reasonably clean, but I don't like the thought of sand somehow getting into the main firing pin assembly and wearing around the exit hole. If anyone could enlighten me as to how that whole confusing piece of equipment comes apart [call it total take-apart if you like], I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks!

Well, as it seems no one else is going to take a stab at this one I'll give it a go.

I have several 92's but to date I've not had the pleasure/opportunity to remove the safety and firing pin from the slide. But were I to go about it I'd start by removing the 2 tiny roll pins on the right side (right side like in shooting position) safety lever. The safety must be in the SAFE position to do this. Then remove the right side safety lever itself. Next remove the remaining half of the safety by pulling and or rotating it out of the slide to/from the left side. This should have a few smaller parts come with it such as a detent and spring and the little rod (it's in the cut on the under side of the slide, on the right rear) that pushes on the trigger link to disconnect it, (there by causing the trigger to be in "safe" condition).

Next I'd remove the roll pin that holds the firing pin "block" in place and then take out the block and it's spring. This should also allow you to remove the firing pin, or rather the firing pin should pop out when/as the block is removed due to action of the firing pin spring.

Lastly knock out the extractor pin and the extractor and its spring should fall out. It looks as though this pin needs to come out the top side of the slide and be "peened" in place after you reinstall it.

From the look of these assemblies I would surely expect detents and springs to make unannounced journeys across the room as you pull the safety lever out of the slide!
I'd recommend you work on top of a large towel and wrap it over your hands and slide as you pull the safety out.

Best of luck,

If everyone thought like me, I'd be a damn fool to think any differently!

I certainly thank you, kind Sir, for replying; I did get a chance to "take a stab" at thinks tonight, although I was sure it would the the firing pin to be the first item be taking a stab..

I was able to take the righthand side safty piece away, and remove the ejector and the safty release/locking mechanism, but the firing pin housing and left side safty piece were...giving me a little trouble. I'll look at it again tomorrow or so. I removed all the pins that seemed to be relevant [in fact, there are only...four pins that one can actually remove, is that correct? Confusing for a novice!
