My new 1 gun for everything up to and including elk
24 September 2006, 19:59
Mike_DettorreMy new 1 gun for everything up to and including elk
Cause I have a personal limit of 250 yds (cause I can't shoot accurately under field conditions past that)...and I am getting old and weak (46 next month)...and I don't have much time to reload (workaholic)...I had a new lightweight .308 built...
Remington 700 action with fluted bolted, skeletonized bolt handle, aluminum shroud, and titanium firing pin, (yes I know an unreliable pushfeed with a litigation trigger), a lone wolf tupperware stock with limbsaver pad, blind magazine (how inconvenient), a douglas premium #2 fluted (will heat up way too fast and fluting really won't help but it looks cool and chicks dig it) stainless (kitchen untensil steel), a leupold 2.5x8 (okay maybe I got one thing right), with a aluminum heavy duty tactical rings (oaky that's oxy moronic), and a XS peep sight integral to the base.
6 3/4 lbs loaded including sling aand four extra rounds of ammo.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Rick RWomen will love you and deer will fear you, you have the perfect hunting rifle.

I was thinking about another .308, but shot my RSI, got 1" groups and remembered we normally take deer at less than 70 yard around here...

DKimMike,
Very nice rifle. Can you give more details on the bases with the integral peep, and also the rings.
Thank you,
David

Mike_DettorreBases are XS rear weaver with integral gohost ring...XS is the new name of Axhley.
Rings are made by TSR up in Oregon. The rear ghost ring requires you to go with medium rings on the 2.5x8 scope

Savage99What does it weigh with an apple and two candy bars?

I agree with you on your rifle concept and the reasons. Here is my version which I have been shooting for a while. Its a Kimber Montana in 308 with a Zeiss 4X and as shown goes about six pounds. Mine has a Decelerator pad.

Mike_DettorreSavage,
I am not allowed candy bars too pudgy as it is and apple has a poor weight to value ratio too much water content...I however did weigh it with two weight watchers granola bars and they only add 3 oz.

500grainsFor game larger than elk, a basic R93 Blaser with black plastic stock and sporter .375 H&H barrel with sights weighs only 6 pounds. Easy to carry.

z1rMike,
Sweet!
My equivilent is a vz24 that weighs in at 7.25 ready to go. Not as lite but every bit as handy. I totally understand your rationale.
I hunted with my 700 .30-06 for twenty years before someone told me Push feed was crap. Funny how I never experienced the stench first had. Yes, I am a dyed in the wool mauser fan but I never experenced a failure to feed, fire, or bring home the game with my 700. Oh, and the handle never fell off either.
Enjoy and post pics of your future successes.

Now when you get here to hunt in a couple weeks will you still own the rifle or will you have grown tired of it and sold it to Roger in favor of yet another project????

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

22WRFYou think you have it rough at 46. Wait until you get to be 54 and your hips start to get arthritis in them.
I did about the same thing. I am keeping my three Heavy Winchester classics (one .300 and two .338s) but I purhased a little short action .308 they call the classic compact.
What a nice little rifle. And controlled feed to boot.

dustofferMike--that sounds like a great rifle for culling hogs on our place--but my M70 Featherweight is more than adequate. Killed two boars out of the plastic blind in less than 15 minutes Friday evening. Both of them were great bbq pigs at 57 and 66 lbs.

care to 'splain that one?

I think, Remmie makes an excellent North American action, and the 308 is, well, the choice of snipers, elite military teams, and the case has been necked in every direction and for every purpose.
Other than SOME of the early rums, one never hears of "my wally world special remmie wont feed, who do I send it and $200 to, in order to get it fixed?

Can always use help, but getting too close to deer season to declare war. Hogs numbers have been down a bit due to feeders turned back to off-season settings, plus dry weather.
I can count on them being back once we turn the feeders back up in a couple of weeks.

GerryHey, Mike,
Very Nice looking Lightweight!
Like prof242 need my bolt on the other side so I can operate it.
As a real weight-reduction measure would ask you to consider carrying those 4 x 180 gr. Nosler's in your pockets (two in each to distribute the weight evenly); not on the sling. Probably a 2-3% savings without any additional modifications.
Think how much more refreshed you'll be when you get back at the end of the day and besides an ole' sharpshooter like yourself won't require immediate access to the Final Defensive Perimeter barrage anyway.
Seriously, a VERY nice loking piece!
Have Fun.

My single-shot K-95 is pretty trim & light also. I carry the two extra cartidges; one in each pocket.
Cheers,

analog_peninsulaThat's right, I forgot that a .308 won't kill anything larger than a coyote. I guess the complete pass through that killed my first hog dead and then punched completely through the second hog killing it too was a fluke.

I don't know why anyone knowledgeable would say that 30 was a bad caliber choice or the .308 Winchester was a poor cartridge choice. And certainly a 700 is a more than adequate choice for the platform.
