CZ 527 Safety, Firing Pin, and Shroud options

I am getting ready to head off to the PA School of Gunsmithing at the first of the year. In tow is a CZ527, I am looking into heavily customizing it as one of my projects (both in school and after class). The biggest thing I want to change is the safety mech and bolt shroud. Now I am aware that all of this will have to be a full on custom project as no one currently makes anything for the CZ bolt and shroud, this ok by me. I am looking into making the current safety disapear and modifiying the left side of the action to fit a Mauser style (2 position MDL 70) safety, I know the firing pin and bolt handle will also need to modified to accommodate the new firing pin.

Now I go through all of this to ask, has anyone ever attempted the project at hand or is it a futile effort in most minds? Also am I missing anything that will need "tweaking", i.e. the trigger, as a cocking piece may/ will need to be made.

I imagine the first question is why? There are Kimbers and other rifles out there, so forth and on. Well this is something I have always wanted to do but never wanted to pay for, I imagine the bill for such a conversion is well above my pay-grade. One way or another I will build this, but the years in the USMC has taught me one big lesson, find someone who's done it first and copy them, lol.

Well thank you in advance for those who chime in and help out.

Adam Bentley

Left side because you are left handed, or left side because that is a more natural position for a right hander?

I have no advice on how to proceed, but the otherwise high-quality CZ action is one that begs for modification. Getting rid of the backward operating "safety" is a big step toward making it a much better action. While you're at it, be sure to grind down the ridiculously thick bolt root so that it will clear a low-mounted scope ocular lens housing. Rigging a flush internal double-stack magazine would also make it a better action.

Good luck. Too bad CZ doesn't build the old BRNO action the way they should be in the first place.

The Bolt handle is one of the major areas I was looking into. Give it a Oberndorf style straight handle, man alive. Know I have seen one or two postion swing safeties fabricated from barrel stubs. I figure as long as I think it out, it shouldn't be that hard to make.

Now the real treat is the bottom metal, I hear a very nice piece will be available in the next few months, if not I will fabricate an internal magazine, 3 rds. and try using the exsisting bottom metal and turn it into something decent. Time will tell. Adam

Good luck with your project.

If CZ would just incorporate those same modifications in its factory rifles they would sell twice as many. Of course, they would also need to get rid of that ugly opaqaue stock paint they use that totally obscures any grain the wood might have had. And it would be nice if they would either use a matt blue or a polished blue, not a Mossberg blue.

They do have an excellent single-set trigger, however, and tend to be more accurate than the average rifle just as they come from the box.

He has cosmetic options, rings, singleshot followers, but nothing that alters the action appearance and function. I really hate the bent bolt handles and built in mounts. Even if it's machining off the original mounts and and adding contoured bases so be it, and the bolt needs some work too. Again the end result is going to/ should look like a true Mauser, even contemplating the G33/40 cuts like Butch Lamberts little Beggs. This is going to be my Squirrel rifle (22 Mink) so I want people to say, WTH is that thing, you shoot squirrels with that.
