The howa 1500 is the same rifle as a weatherby vanguard.Howa makes this rifle for weatherby and has also made them for smith&wesson and mossberg. They are a well made rifle and a very good value for their normal price let alone for $100.

Nothing fancy, solid rifle, strong action from what I've been told. You did good. What caliber?

it's worth at least four times that amount.

Find the guy and give him another "C" note so you're not scolded by the gun lords in the middle of the night.

I have a Howaby. Fit, finish and especially the tolerances of the machine work is exceptional. Very few tooling marks. Bluing is pretty good as well. Throw in the owner adjustable trigger and the lack of a lawyer/stupid lock and you have an excellent package.
Remchester would to well to send some QA guys to Howa to get an idea of how it is supposed to be done.

$100 bucks? Such a deal. I agree with vapodog. Give the guy more money so as to avoid the bad kharma that is heading your way.

This is my opinion. Your opinion may vary.

Same story here. Had a S&W 1500 (Howa) in 243, had it rebarrelled to 375/284. The trigger is very adjustable and never had a problem with it. My brother has a Howa in 270 and he loves it. It's VERY accurate!

I have a gunsmithing friend who got a Howa 300WM with fiberglass stock [not injection molded] for $100. It just needed a bolt. He found a bolt and has shot several deer and one elk with the rifle.

He says it has a flat bottom reciever.
I got a Howa 270 for $200, but the bore does not look great, and has a little of the "Addams and Bennet roughness" look.

I recently had one of these in the shop for some work. It was stainless version with laminated thumb-hole stock and heavy barrel in 22-250. I rechambered it for 22-250 AI, glass bedded the stock and free-floated the barrel as the stock touched a little on one side. I like the trigger as it's easy to adjust.

Biggest problem with the rifle was that the scope mount holes were not drilled parallel with bore (more and more a common defect on production rifles). When the Weaver mounts were screwed on, the top of the front base was canted to the right and the rear base was canted to the left, so much that you could easily see it by holding the rifle to your shoulder and looking over them. Customer didn't want to spend bucks for custom scope mounts so I mounted his scope using a set of Millet Angle-loc rings which allow for a great deal of windage adjustment. Rifle shot sub-MOA with factory 22-250 ammo so I'm sure it will shoot better with load development using AI brass.

Seems like a rifle of good value for the money.
