It's a beautiful action. It's a damn shame about the pits though. I bet enough of them would be below the wood line though not to bother me.

I don't have any idea what it's worth.

I dont understand why the bottom metal is @ 100% coverage while the action has so little engraving? Keep costs down... Roll Eyes

It may have been a practice piece. I think the pits could be welded up and dressed, but even if that were done the action would only be worth about 1/5 th of what he's asking.

Sometimes I think the issue is not the price.....as the price is intended to prevent the sale.....if he really wants to sell the action then he'll adjust the price.....until then it's a showpiece.....at least in his eyes.

I'm no Master Engraver, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn once... I think the engraving on the floor plate is actualy in good taste and well done from what I can see in the pictures. Had the action been cleaned up and that much effort put in the reciever, It would bring the price up And maybe closer to the actual asking price. Any engravers here care to comment? What would it cost to do that amount of coverage on a floorplate, and then have extensive engraveing done to a reciever? I think some one found a floorplate and then came up with an action, maybe the engraver got burn out after doing the bottom metal...

Think about it. The pitting more than likely occured long AFTER the engraving was done. What engraver would put that much time & effort into a gun that was already pitted simply because it had the Mauser banner on it?

Doug, I would guess that the pitting is all below the stockline and the owner did not want it surfaced ground if it did not show. The pits will do nothing to diminish the looks or function of a finished gun. It also would be difficult to surface grind the action and not get into the crest, which it seems is important to some folks. The engraving just seems to fresh for the gun to have gone through all that pitting and the engraving to still look so good.

It strikes me as being very overpriced, although the engraving is very well done. The problem I see is if you build a rifle on this action, it would look strange without some matching engraving on the barrel and scope mounts etc (which would cover up the crest that they so carefully saved Roll Eyes).

If H&H's name was on it, they would have demanded a lot better looking action from the start. I suspect they just sold this on consignment or as part of a trade in. Them selling it to the next owner does not do anything to the value of the piece or the quality of the work.

That is what I should have said about the engraving... No pits seem to show up there! It's wayyy over priced, but had someone had started this action out on the right foot to begin with, I'd think it would have been a damn nice rifle. It still could be fixed, but what it would take to finish it...ouch!
I'd like to have it in my stash and bring it back to its glory days, knowing I only had $100.00 dollars in it! Nuf said, shame the owner doesnt finish her out!

Doesnt look like "fresh" engraving to me. Especialy the reciever.

Looks like a salvage. Reciever sanded and bottom maybe cleaned with metal prep. No matter, the price is still a hose job

I agree, looks like the reciever may have been lightly buffed, though I am no expert.
