Last year the SAA (or Delta) luggage monkeys managed to break the stock on my Sako L691. I lamented my misfortune on this forum and several of you pointed me in the direction of a gentleman (or several) that you believed could repair it to a "better than new" condition. Though I bookmarked some websites at the time, I'm now unable to locate any of that information. A search of AR did not locate that thread.

So now that I'm getting back around to this, and will hopefully scrape up the funds to put Humpty-Dumpty back together again, can anybody out there recommend a stock-fixer-uppper that has a chance of reparing this:

I would recommend that you contact Dennis Earl Smith. His business is called The Stock Doctor and he specializes in stock repairs. Here is his web site and contact info.

It does appear that the stock was cross grained through the wrist and that is a recipe for disaster.

Thanks Chic. I know very little about stock making or repair, but it does appear to me that the stock is laid out wrong in relation to the grain of the wood. As pretty as the stock is, I'm forced to question whether it's worth repairing or not. I'm sure the good Stock Doctor can answer that!

Highly recommend Bob Fulton, http://cap-n-ball.com/fulton/, email rf44@highstream.net, did a custom Krag for me that was badly split through the grip, checkering all broken out, etc., repairs are invisible. Also did a Jim Howe Mauser (before Griffin & Howe) for Mike Petrov who frequents this forum,all broken through the grip like yours. Perfect job. Now doing a Ballard with bad grip and toe cracks for me and a Krag by Johnson's Kenai Rifles that has chunks of maple broken out of the inletting by recoil - it is a Danish Krag in .450 Alaskan. Does not make stocks, only repairs them.

I see you're in Southern Minnesota.....Take it to Ahlman's in Morristown (just north of town in the country) and they can epoxy it for you. I'd use Brownells glass bedding for the repair and have no worries about it at all. Someone needs to honey comb the wood a bit with a (dremel) tool to deepen the depth of the epoxy to set.

I would recommend Bob Fulton as well. He would have done a better job on the finish but I ask that he not remove any of the original finish.

I know how you feel about Ahlman's but please! Don't send anyone there! Larryu is a nice guy but those folks he got working for him are replacement mechanics, that's what they are trained for, not real craftsmen. I have MANY clients who refuse to go back there.

As for getting that one repaired, yes, it can be done. But like CHic says, it is destined to be a Titanic.

IMO Ahlman's checkering is just fine.....as a matter of fact it's a real bargain.

I've used them twice and was extremely pleased both times.

I would have to agree with Vapodog on this one; with reservation. It is OK but not of Guild quality!
