Hi all,

Need some help.

A friend has asked me to bed his 6.5X55 Swede sporter. I took the rifle apart and something does not look right, it seems as though the bottom metal has been bent.upwards rear of the mag release housing. It is not glaringly obvious, but whoever inletted did a poor job and did it too deep in the trigger plate area.

I am measuring a seperating distance of 28.3mm between the bottom flat of the rear tang and the top of the bottom plate, ie roughly the length of pillar you would install if you were pillar bedding. The rear screw looks as though it has been filed down

What should it be?

As an aside this Mauser is (was) a little jewel, all the serial nos match, its a pity it has been butchered with some ill fitting scope mounts (Tasco) and the top of the bridge has been milled down, not polished and not been blued right.

If it is bent, I don't think it is too serious, maybe I can fix it, or should I just leave it as is?

Cheers

Pete

Pete,

I'd leave it alone. Just cut the pillar off at angles to match the flats.

You could really open up a can of worms if you try to straighten it.

I'd inform the owner of the problem and your intentions so he doesn't blame you twenty years down the road.

You might want to bed the bottom metal (below the wood line) as well as the action.
