How big of a deal is it to have a 30-06 converted over to a 7mm Rem Magnum? I have a Tikka M65 (Or Ithaca LSA 65) in 30-06. I believe I can get a magnum bolt, floorplate and magazine for this gun. Aside from rechambering the barrel, is there anything else I would need to do?

What would I expect to pay for this conversion (roughly)?

Frankly, it's less costly to trade guns than to convert them especially when you have to install a new barrel.

shameJosywales, you can't just rechamber an 06 to 7mm. if you have all the other things you mentioned then you should go with 300Win. mag. It would save you the cost of a barrel if not changing calibers. thumb

Josy,
Rebarrel, open the bolt face, buy a different magazine box and possible rework the feed rails (not sure if these feed off the magazine box or the action geometry). Cheaper to buy a gun in that caliber than what you contemplate.

Think about it. Going from 30-06 to 7MM Mag you gain very little,if any thing. Do the Math. Look at the 30-06 with the Federal Hgh Energy loads. Even steping up to the 300 Win Mag is not that great a deal. And I say this with the 300 Mag being one of my favorite cartridges. Much better IMHO if you need more than the 30-06 HE loads, is to go to a 338 Mag or a 375 H&H.
I recommend you either keep the 30-06 aned get a "bigger" gun, or trade it for a "bigger" gun.

Of course if you had a Blaser R 93 you could just get a new barrel [and magnum bolt head]. Big Grin
