I have a used Sav99E . . . I would like to restock it with something much classier than the worn stock that's on it now. I've looked online, and there are some Companies online that look like they do nice work (Great American Gunstocks, in Yuba City, CA is one that I've looked at) but was wondering if there was anyone in Central Texas that could put together a nice stock for me without me having to ship the rifle off to the far end of the earth LOL. I live in Camp Wood, TX, and a drive up to Kerrville or Fredricksburg is all part of living out here . . . San Antonio as well. If anyone can point me to a smith that does stockwork in my area, that would be much appreciated. Troy

Hey Troy, I'm having my 1899B in .38-55 restocked by a local gunsmith friend of mine here in Boise. I brought him this piece of walnut I had picked up. I had him make the buttstock like one of my perch bellied 1899B's but 3/4" longer LOP. Don't know if you saw the pix I posted a few weeks back. Blk Walnut Buttstock I took these just last week after the filler was applied. Sorry about the blurriness and that darn flash! Hadn't used the camera in a while so needed to read up on it again. Got it down now so should probably retake some of these. 1899B RtSide Here's a clearer one of the butt 1899B Butt Rt Hope this offers some encouragement! Jeff P

Troy, If my gunsmith buddy ever get around to putting a barrel on one for me, I plan to restock a 99. I spoke with Dennis Olson in Plains Mt, he has a pattern for a 99, you might give him a call. I doubt you will find anybody in SA or south texas the does a lot of stock work, or at least anybody that I know of. Billy, High in the shoulder (we band of bubbas)

I bet there is a gunsmith at Hill Country Rifles that can do that work if he wants to take the job on. Try Wm. C. McMillan in Galveston. Last # I had was 409 737 9186. Sonny has done nice work for me and many Dallas Safari Club members. Not sure he will take on a Sav 99 but...I never asked him either. You can borrow money but you can not borrow time. Go hunting with your family.

Troy, you are better off mailing it to someone who can do a good job for you than the drive it to someone who can not. Just a thought, it is not that traumatic to mail one somewhere. BTW, welcome to AR.

Alex Harper in San Antonio did several Savage 99's for me and a friend of mine and they are superb. He is 83 and I don't know how much work he is taking on. If I could figure out how to put pictures up you could see the quality....There is also Dominick Pisano in San Antonio, Tx (2106967621) and he does superb work. Dominick also knows Alex and could better inform you if he is still working

Dominick Paisano(?) is a very competent stockmaker. He usually attends a couple of the bigger shows in Houston each year. "There are only three kinds of people; those who can count, and those who can't."

Make sure that you get someone that has successfully restocked a M99 and get a fixed price. Fitting the forearm on a M99 is the stuff of nightmares.

Try Precision In Kerrville. http://www.precisiongunstocks.com/ Lyle "I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. I would remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue." Barry M Goldwater.

Precision's site is quite specific that they a) do not do custom work b) do not machine customer's wood and c) do not supply Mod 99 stocks. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere. NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR. I've got a better picture of my 1899B that I took last week: Sav 1899 octagon in .38-55 After metal finishing, I think I'm going to send this off to the engraver This whole rebuildin process has taken a bit of time but I'm pretty happy with the outcome so far. I originally bought a set of semi-fancy wood from Great American but after returing them 3 times finally gave up and took that set. There is a whole lot of work to do one of those set. I almost feel it is easier to stock one of these from a chunk of walnut like my gunsmith friend has done in this instance. I've been working wood for 25 years and feel comfortable doing one now after watching his process. He has a nice mill at his disposal which makes the initial inletting go a whole lot easier. He has a custom set of cutters for milling the octagon channel in the forend. Jeff P

I'd want someone who had previously done a model 99 simply because of the forend. There's a way of hanging the forend and also using bumpers that wasn't formerly done to accurize these rifles. I think all of this originated with work done on Ruger No.1s, but it's applicable to Savages as well. Be sure to ask about it. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal Cal Sibley

Stay away from Great American Gunstocks, IMO they are, to put it nicely, thieves, others have had the same experience. As to having a 99 restocked, here's a nice one done by Griffin & Howe. Seems they did quite a few.

Recoil Rob, Interesting 99's... That lower one looks to be engraved and setup with a G&H sidemount? Do you have a larger / higher res picture you could email me? Jeff P
