I am kicking around the idea of building on of these. Is it possible and safe to rechamber a 6.5x55 or would it be better to start from scratch. Please excuse my ignorance on this as I am in an information collection stage right now. Any comments welcome and apprecaited. ------------------

Won't work. The base diameter the 6.5X55 is larger than the 06 case. Walker

You can do it if you cut a few more threads (like 3) on your barrel and set it back. You need to loose .006" of taper and that is one sixth of the total taper of the old cartridge. you will likely have more problems with the pressure levels that can generate in the O6 case. Will have to ask some of the swede pros on that. chic [This message has been edited by Customstox (edited 04-05-2002).]

I don't think the M96 will be long enough for an 06 length cartridge. Try using a M98 action. ------------------

I have a 6.5-06 on a 98 Mauser with a 24" Shilen that is a pure marvel. 129 gr Hornadys over 3,000 easily.

It can be done and works fine. As mentioned, remove threads from the barrel to remove taper and rechamber. The magazine box will have to be lengthened, same as any Mauser action, for full length -06 loads. As long as your handloads don't exceed factory pressures you'll be fine. After all, Kimber chambered and sold 96 actions in 22-250 and 308, both of which run at higher pressures than the standard -06. I have one and it is a great rifle. - Dan
