I am looking for a small compact gun that is light and easy to carry i have found a couple different guns that I like for a great price locally however they all have 22" barrels I was wondering what the typical cost is for having a barrel cut down and recrowned by a gun smith

50 to 75 bucks, depending...

there's a good risk of marring the bluing, which is why it's so much for a small job

$100 bucks give or take $25.00...In many cases it will increase accuracy as the tube becomes stiffer...

Jeffe,
I don't know why there is a risk of maring a barrel, unless the smith doesn't know what he is doing...
