Mauser Action Work????

Recently "inherited" VZ24 actions,(2) and couple G33/40 actions as well and seeking source for quality gunsmith to eventually build into sporting rifles. Barrel work not a problem, but would want to send these to 'smith and have them polished, smoothed, etc. or whatever they do to such actions in preparation for building into sporters??? A "guild build..." is not in the cards for me, but need a quality smith who is experienced and yet attainable cost wise. Any suggestions??
Thanks,

My smith is H&K gunsmithing in Forest grove Or. 503 357-6807.He does real good work on mausers. I am no smith but I would say you need to polish, Drill and tap 4 holes change out the safty, put in a timney trigger and if you want a magnum you will need to have the bolt face opend and feed rails too. And don't forget bending the bolt.
There is a picture of my springfield he did on the small bore forum under post rifle pics posted for tj270win if you want to know what I paid send me a PM...tj3006

I sincerely hope you don't really mean bending the bolt on a g33/40?

That would be like saying you wanna put Ketchup on a steak cooked by a Texan!

Hopefully you meant to say weld on a new handle?

Before you do anything else search these pages and find the photos of ForrestB's three G.33/40 rifles. Study them for ideas for yours.

While the VZ-24s are more common, you will definitely want to treat those G.33/40s right. It would be a shame not to use them for "guild" type rifles, even if it takes you awhile to save up the coin. You could start out with cheap platic stocks at first and change them out to fine custom stocks later, but once you do the metal one way its not all that easy to change it.

there are alot of folks that post here on AR that are superb metalsmiths. three that immeidately come to mind are Mark Stratton, Thomas Burgess, and Jim Dubell, who, by the way, just completed work on two mauser actions for the next Guild auction.

Never hurts to ask!

Right now I have three VZ-24 actions and all are so smooth that honing will only rough them.....all are like butter (all 1938)

If you insist on a fine smith working on them I'd send a PM to Jim Kobe..... He also welds on beautiful bolt handles.

Thanks for the input on this project. The VZ24's will have the bolt handles replaced w/ swept back style, model 70 style on one and the other will have the straight down drop version. As for the G33/40 versions, will treat them with extra care for realize they are not all that common these days and am told they are somewhat rare????
Have had all of these for several years now and hesitated to sporterize due to pressure from my collector friends, but figured at my age might as well get some use out of them. Have several good quality claro walnut blanks over 30 years old and time to put them to work as well. Thanks for the input and any and all advise appreciated.

driver, if you G33/40's are complete rifles and particularly with matching numbers, I would investigate the market. You will likely find that you can sell the complete rifle and buy a action only and have quite a bit of money to spare. Just a thought.

Customstox,
I have been told what you advise, and considering that approach, but there are two of us in this project and preservation is not an issue with us at this time. I well realize what you are saying and thanks for the input.

I can't seem to find them in the phone book/yellow pages.

Thanks,

I'd give Gary Stiles a call. He does outstanding work & is quite reasonably priced.

He is making a LH Mauser in 35 Whelen for me right now.

My rifle will not be ready for about a year. He is currently working on an 18 month turn around.

I do have some pictures of his work from a gun show I went to in February.

Here is that double rifle. VERY nice.
