mounting a 1-4x20 on a Sako- Help!

Wonder if someone else has come up with the same problem as this:

I have mounted a 1-4x20mm Leupold Vari2 on my Sako 9.3x62 in the standard Sako low mounts (which are not very low!) only to find that when I wind back the scope to 1 power I can see about one third of the barrel in the lower part of the scope. The scope is at just the right height for me.

I doubt that going to the medium mounts is going to be high enough to solve the problem and was wondering if any of you out there had experience of this?

If I went to the medium mounts I suspect that teh scope would be so high it would look like a handle on top of the rifle (ie, ridiculous) and also I would have to streach my neck up to see through it.

The barrel is visible from about 2 power down and I particularly want this scope for Buff hunting in the Northern Territory here in Aus and Africa down the track. [Confused]

Maybe I could just get used to it and learn to ignore it?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

dingo,

Welcome to the forum.

You will get this problems with all low power scopes. It is unavoidable.

The lower the scope power the more field of view you have. At 3x and lower the field of view is so wide it sees the barrel too. You WILL NOT see the barrel when there's a buff in the scope too. [Smile]

I had a Ruger 77 international in 308 I put the same scope you have on. I used it in the cedar swamps here normally on 1X and never had a problem with hitting my target. The only time I noticed, or was bothered by the barrel was on the target range. If it really bothers you and you want a fast sight that lets you hold a bit better at longer range try a peep with a "ghost ring"

This is normal -- not to worry.

Dingo:

I have a 1.5 to 4X on a Marlin 336 I own. I too can see a portion of the barrel when on low magnification. You can install taller rings and that will help, but since the scope is at the right height for you, you probably don't want to do this. Mr. Belk is right, you won't notice the barrel when shooting at game, although I haven't taken a buff with my .35 Remington. Maybe I should start a thread in the African hunting forum...

I have a S&B 1.5 x 4 on a .375 and the front sight is so clear I could shoot off of it. I wish it was this clear to me when I want to use the open sights. [Wink]

You'll get used to it, or buy a 2x7.
