Would anyone have a good picture of some custom Pre War scope mount bases? I am considering having a set made due to my growing frustration at seeking a sighting solution for my ultimate .30-06 project... My needs are simple. I want two piece bases as low as possible for either Talley or Weaver style QD rings. I want to be able to clearly see the iron sights over the bases (probably swapping the 22-G out for a more modern flip down Lyman) and also use the clip slot when the scope is removed. Suggestions on who could do this work would be appreciated...

DaBee, just a quick thought but if you get very low mounts and rings might you not run into a problem with the bolt handle hitting the scope. I have had this problem but not on a pre-war model.

Here are some pics of Talley bases made by Mark Stratton on my pre-war M70. Scope base pics

DeeBee, Have you given anythought to either a pop up peep sight in the rear base, ala the BRN0's or a Talley that will slide on the rear base. Building a rifle that tries to do the best for open sights and a scope always involves some sacrifice. If it was me, I would build it for the primary purpose, say for a scope, and then do the best I can with the open sights.

My first experiment was to run a round end mill cutter down the middle of a Weaver Grand Slam base cutting about to the depth of the cross slot. I was hoping to clear a sight line for the standard rear sights... I should have called the experiment 'How to make Weaver bases even uglier...' My milling setup is shakey at best. The Weaver S48 rear PreWar base is too wide to fit in the rear bridge slot- it has to be filed and stoned to fit- which is tough removing the exact same amount from each side... I would love a pop up peep. I have the Warne Peep Base on my Winchester Stainless .308- while not exactly perfect, it is one of the best solutions I have seen recently for an instantly available sight after removing the scope- my problem is now the front sight which I had to epoxy on because of my reluctance to drill and tap into the featherweight contoured barrel... it popped off once already when I was filing it down during sight in... Mark Stratton's work certainly looks top shelf- I'll strongly consider it.

DeBee, I would suggest another solution - a German Claw or Swing Mount with the front base on a ring around the barrel in front of the reciever. http://www.eaw.de/English/Products/products.html Best regards, Fritz

Mark Stratton's work is top shelf. He has made me 6 sets of these based for my Winchester rifles and they are perfect. They allow the Talley rings to return to zero. zz
