I'm about to finish a VZ-24 I barreled and chambered to 6.5 X 55 in a fancy classic shadowline walnut stock. It has ebony fore and aft and a satin finish.

I'm ready to start checkering but at a loss as to some new pattern. I like flowing patterns with ribbons in them much like the M-70 featherweight rifle. Guess I'm not feeling too creative lately.

Can some of you post photos of your custom checkering for me to get some fresh ideas for this Mauser. Maybe I can take some of the parts I like from several of your creations.

That's a tempting thought. She's done work for me before and she's very good. It's my cheap ass attitude however that makes me want to checker my own gun.

333_OKH...that too is a fabulously and impeccably done rifle. The checkering is in tune with the gun.....
BTW that bolt jeweling job is the best I've ever seen.

I would do a nice wrap around and if you feel real adventurous put a border on it.

SDH,
Do you have any idea why they put the rear scope base so far to the rear on that 52? I could never shoot that rifle from a prone or sitting position and the scope is nearly as far forward as it can go. Just a little pet peeve of mine, particularly on shorter actioned rifles, it is very hard to get the scope far enough forward for my long neck. I do not see any reason why the ring could not have been moved 3/8" or so forward. Of course if that is where the customer wanted it, then I guess it don't much matter what I think. When the day comes that I can have such a rifle built, I guess I can have it wherever I want.

I really like Tuckers work. Have any idea how backlogged he is these days?

John

PS, you get the check for the books yet?

333 that rifle is awesome. Very simple, perfect for that set up. That metal work is fantastic. How about some more details. Vapo I like the craftsmenship with the ribbons and elaborate patterns. Same time a simple wrap around checkering job IMO should make the stock come alive not over power it. I look at it like engraving less is more.

Hey Vapo, it may be a tad too simple for you, but the checkering on the SAKO M-75's is clean and flowing, with a couple of ribbons in the mix. I like it a lot myself, and you don't see much else like it--no fleur-de-lis etc., but that's the point for me.....

I really like the idea of all of those shown so far. There are some personal preferences that I would change. A question....on the Cabela's stock that 333_OKH put up...is it just me, or is there a line of checkering outside the border on the forward part of the grip and why is there no border on the rear portion of that same grip?

Thanks for the thread, as I am also looking for possible patterns.

I noticed that as well....but the work is so beautifully done that I decided when I get that good then I'll ask about these things. Until then I'll just admire.

It is typical to only put borders on the sides that are formed by the checkering lines. The back and bottom of the grip panel, and the top of the forend panel do not run parallel to the checkering lines so generally do not get the border. This is of course not always the case.

Vapo, here are a couple of shots of a stock Serengeti did for me with the 'Sako style' checkering pattern.

Forrest,

If you like it that is all that really counts. Many moons ago I was pretty sceptical on Skipline checkering, then I saw some really well done pieces and while I wouldn't want it on every rifle in my rack a well done job on a rifle would be welcome.

Have you seen flat topped English Style checkering? Reminds me of slipline a little and I think its excellent. Some folks aren't fans of checkering, I think a custom rifle is naked without it, but its like cosmetics on gals too much is not better, and it must be well applied.
