Where can I get bottom metal for a Browning safari FN mauser? Thanks

I wonder if the Brownings had the same bottom metal as did the FN Mausers that Sears used on their Model 50s. If so, you might find somebody who wants to change out the bottom metal on their Model 50 and get it from them. I know that the bottom metal on my model 50 has a trigger that is attached to the trigger guard via a pin. Kinda looks a little bit like a Winchester trigger.

Dean and 22WRF- I believe that the majority of the Browning Safari's made with FN Actions have bottom metal that is/was aluminium. Mine is that way. I would be willing to bet that a bottom metal unit from a Sears Model 50 would work as a replacement but, I have not tried it. I ended up having the bottom metal of my Browning "re-coated." I think I even posted a discussion about it some months ago. May the wind be in your face and the sun at your back. P. Mark Stark

i dont have it in front of me, but i am pretty certain my late 60's safari has steel bottom metal. it does not have the trigger pinned to the guard. i would imagine a CD, Mark X, argie would work. there might be some difference in wood to metal fit... can you swap a sears model guard without the trigger? NRA Life Member Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun.

The CD/Zastava/Mk X stuff has a different front tang length than FN Mauser even though the hole spacing is the same. Been there tried that. Look for something made from another FN action like the Sears, Husky, etc. Even then, there may be minor style differences that either leave gaps, require more inletting or both. I replaced the bottom metal on my m50 FN with Blackburn's made for the 98 Mauser. Of course I am using a new stock also.

I just bought a JC HIggins M50 (though I'm not sure what for), is the M50 FN bottom metal the same (as far as inletting goes) as a military M98 ? 22WRF, are those the original JC Higgins bases on your rifle ? Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I believe mine is aluminum with some sort of paint? It has the cheesy gold "engraving". Wouldnt mind replacing it with steel (its getting a new stock too). ElCabellero, you say the Blackburn mauser 98 will work? Was there any additional metal work needed? Is there any way the aluminum one can be refinished to look halfway decent? Thanks

Dean A Less expensive option would be to use either a mark X or 1909 bottom metal. Both will fit but the inletting might be different. Brownells sells a product or two for refinishing aluminum. I believe its called Alumihyde. Another option would be a local shop that does powder coating, which is what I would probably do with it.

dean, if you are getting a new stock made then you have a little latitude as to what will work. there are several manufacturers of bottom metal that will work. as some have stated the standard length cd/mk10 and argintine bottom metal. you might check on e-bay for a search for parker hale bottom metal there was a fellow selling some a few weeks back. it is a steel hinged floorplate assembly with a bow release. max

[quote]can you swap a sears model guard without the trigger? YUP. Take the gun out of the stock. Drive the pin holding the trigger out and remove the trigger. Drive out the pin holding the upper portion of the trigger mechanism. Save trhe pin. Use it to instal a Timney trigger. Piece of cake. Paul B.
