All,
Browsing about and saw where someone liked the Howa actions. Made in Japan right? Anyhow, what is the skinny on their Legacy M98 actions. They offer two at around $500. Not cheap but do you get what you pay for? Would it stack up well against a Argie 1909 or Mark X to build a really nice custom on? Thanks as always for everyones opinions.

Cheers,
Jason

The 98 actions are not the same as the Howa made in Japan. They are investment cast made by Dumolin (sp?) in France and are reasonably good actions. Charles Daly may be a better deal, though. You can find the details on Dumolin's website. They also make a high-end magnum mauser that Legacy sells for around 2500 to 3000 retail.

Hey Tigertate, Would you happen to have a link to that site? I've got one of those actions on order.

Yes, the Daly might be a better price, but if you add double square bridges, 3 position Winchester style safety, bow floorplate release and the strattle (sp?) floorplate. The Legacy would seem to come ahead in spades. My local dealer sold mine to me for $399 (tax included).

Jason,
There is an action imported by Alex Imports that they call the legacy 98. I don't know if you are confusing it with that one. It is made in Italy. Has a 3 position safety, hinged bottom metal ala Argentine 09 and double square bridges that can be redone to fit Talley rings. I bought mine on a special they had out for dealers and I believe it was under %300 at the time. They are advertising them barreled in gunlist for $399.

Well, I was close. Its www.dumoulin-herstal.com and they are in Belgium, not France. I think the big magnum on the Legacy Sports International website is a Dumoulin. I am not so sure about the other but it may be.

Glad they arrived, Jeffe. One day when things slow down maybe we can meet a little earlier than last time I got to Carter's and we can shoot those puppies, among others.

I looked all over the Dumoulin site and cannot get back to the actions. It may be removed or I may be having a senior moment. Either way, they were the same actions Legacy Sports International sells whether Dumoulin manufactures them or not.
