I'm refinishing an old stock I built. As I'm resanding it I'm remembering that it had some sapwood on the top of the cheekpiece. I believe I used Birchwood Casey's water based stain last time to make it match the rest of the stock. Any suggestions? As usual just my $.02 Paul K

You may also consider a "solvent based " stain as it may give a bit more penetration, eliminate grain raise etc. Another stain used for stubborn wood is Chestnut Ridge stain, from Brownells...works on tight wood like maple, birch, weird imported woods, I've had good luck with etc. hth

fiebing's leather dye is an excellent alcohol stain. many believe that's who makes chestnut ridge's military stock stain I have used Fiebing's dark brown on sapwood, but I was after the reddish-brown military finish so the slightly reddish cast of the Fiebings was masked by the subsequent chestnut ridge quite well. I was pleased with the result.
