Rem. 798 extractor and firing pin

I reviewed the posts on this board before I purchased the 798. It appears, that like most bolt action rifles the only parts that break are the firing pin and the extractor. This rifle was purchased for a future safari and the extractor and firing pin take up very little room and weigh almost nothing.
Also, with this copy of the FN Mauser, I think the only tools I would need to replace either part would be a nail and a wooden block. I'll bring the nail and nature should supply the wood. (I'll do it on the stock if I have to!)
So my question are: Do standard 98 Mauser parts fit this rifle? Does either the firing pin, or the extractor (if I buy one cut for a mag. round) need any gunsmithing?

Thanks,
Arnie

In over 55 years of fiddling with Mausers I have never had either a firing pin or extractor break. That is not to say they can't and I'm sure you will get numerous responses on this forum from people who have. I'm just lucky I suppose. I don't know why you need the nail to effect the change. The bolt disassembles easily with a coin to hold the cocking piece back on most Mausers I've had. The extractor usually doesn't require any tools if memory serves.

I believe standard '98 Mauser parts will fit but it would be wise to insure by having a gunsmith check the firing pin for proper protusion.

That saud.....the spare part you're likely to need is a spare scope alrady mounted and sighted in so all you need to do is remove the old one and install a new one and a few "proof" shots and you're back in action!
