I would like to refinish a custom synthetic stock. It is smooth and I would like to add some texture. My gunsmith now uses textured automotive paint (applied with an airbrush) on his stocks and could redo it but I was wondering if anyone has suggestions of what is available for a DIY project. I have an airbrush if something off the shelf is not available.

There are several types of textures available . Bed Liner kits ?.

Evercoat makes a " GripTex " product to be used in urethane or under it as well as epoxy's .

Let me browse my folders and see what I can come up with for you .

I use krylon nonskid coating. It comes in a spraypaint can and is clear. It works pretty good, but needs touched up every couple of years.

Came up with this stuff ; Try Aircraft Spruce for what your looking for .

Some people use Krylon spray paints .

My choice for durable almost indestructible proof is either Line-X or Urethane Epoxy

such as used in Garage floor applications or Aircraft Urethane . I simply add a small amount

of GripTex ( Comes in different grit textures ) spray it on , then repeat but this time ,

I sprinkle just the texture where I want it most . Then spray over the top 2 or 3 coats with

NOTHING but the Urethane epoxy color , so as to seal everything in . Makes it durable

and looks feels good . Practice on a piece of whatever and get the Custom desired feeling and

color YOU want. Before doing your stock .

P S. I use an industrial epoxy or Randolph AwlGrip or Valspar Deft CrownMetro Aerospace

Even Interlux 2 part works very well . I personally don't care for PPG products much .

BOL .

Coating:Spray able bed liners and such .
Line-X heat-cured, polyurethane coating provides durable textured products Not DIY though .

I have used automotive spatter paint designed for trunks and engine compartments, etc. with great success on a Kimber Montana and Sako Fiberclass stock. They came out fantastic and looking like an H&S web-type finish. So far they have proved to be very durable and provides the desired grip purchase. Lou

If you had the experience as well as materials along with spray equipment and interchangeable nozzles .

I would have suggested Polyester or better Vinyl Ester finishes with spider webbing effects over a base

color or colors ( Camo ) then over coated with either fogging color or clear matte coat , in Urethane

or VE which is short for Vinyl Ester . When spraying webbing solution mixed with pigment a touch of

surfactant and if desired GripTex . Nice stocks can be made Beautiful and in the color of the owners

choice , instead of what's available . One can tape off areas spray texture as a substitute for checkering .
While leaving the bulk of the stock smooth or spray non slip over the entire stock , Your choice .

This not only produces professional looking results but extremely durable finishes as well .

As several products are needed as well as working experience and knowledge of said materials .

I don't recommend them for DIY fers .

Remember if your willing to experiment and practice on cardboard or Masonite samples ,

Want it to look like wood , stone, oynx, marble, spider web, camo

or any other faux finish it more than likely can be done ?. The only limitation is YOUR imagination .

napa auto parts stores sells a clear urethane stone-guard touch up spray in a can. designed to be used around the wheel wells and along the rocker planels of a car. the stuff is tough as nails and it cures to a clear matte bumpy surface.
i've shot it on a laminated stock where the checkering would normally be and it has held up well for three years now.
thier spay cans shoot real nice if you set the can in a pan of hot tap water for a few minutes before you use it....

I can tell you nothing about this products ease of use or anything about the durability but.....I have seen spray cans of all-in-one marble paint at Wal-Mart and Home Depot and have thought about re-painting all of my hodge-podge of handloading stuff to actualy have a matching color scheem. It was about $5 a can and came in two or three earth toned colors.
