a 1941-vintage Savage 99 (99R, I think). It has a 24" barrel and is chambered for 250-3000. The front sight is present, but there is a filler in the rear sight dovetail. Is there a resource for information like this?

Depends on if it's an R or RS.

The R had a semi-buckhorn rear, the RS had a folding leaf sight so it could be folded down to use the receiver sight.

I would imagine that at one time your gun had a receiver sight and that's why the rear slot is filled.
