I have a Winchester 9422 that my dad had engraved by a local engraver back in the late 80's. So the rifle has a lot of sentimental value to me. The problem is I had a local gunsmith here in El Paso drill and tap the tang for a Marbles tang sight. He drilled the holes about .25" too far forward and the front screw about .125" off the center of the tang so now the bolt hits the sight if you dont lower it between shots and it cants drastically off to one side. I have heard that I can have those holes welded and new ones properly drilled and tapped. I dont want to take it back to him for several reasons but I need to get it fixed. Does anyone know of a good smith they would reccomend to do this work and what should I expect to pay. The receiver is French Grey so there will not be any re-bluing involved.

You could always have the holes tig welded (filled) and then re drilled and tapped... it should all be hidden be the sight... jeffe

I'm not the expert here but I'm sure the heat of welding plus the draw-filing and re-polishing will discolor the area such that refiinishing will be mandatory.

The tang will definately need re-polished to clean it up. But it is going to get color cased and a new set of AAA claro croth stocks. The color case will take care of any inconsistencies in the finish since the whole action will be prepped to color case it. I just need to find someone to weld it for me. Is there a specific rod type that is reccomended for such things?
