I have a 700 rem. ss I have shot approx. 800 rounds through it . the lands are rounded near the throat & it is shooting slower than when new it's still accurate . would rechambering to 7 STW clean it up & restore itt's shooting potential ???
If it's a 7mm of some type you could rechamber it and thereby freshen up the throat/land area. Keep in mind that a 22" barrel on a 7STW is a complete waste of time and money, and a 24" isn't a whole lot better (I know, I have one). By that I mean that you will get more bullet speed, but without a long barrel you won't get all the speed you're probably looking for. Also, if the rifle doesn't have a mag bolt face and magazine box to begin with, you'll have to figure those into your calculations as well. If it was my rifle, I would leave it as is until the accuracy went away, and then re-barrel. Probably to the 7 RUM (no belt, more case capacity) - Dan

When the 7mmSTW was first developed I thought it was a dumb cartridge and resisted buying a reamer for quite a while. It finally occurred to me that I was the dummy given the number of requests I got so I bought a reamer and made a whole bunch of STWs. I still think it's a dumb cartridge. The only way to make it dumber would be to make the case bigger. The 7RUM does that. Regards, Bill.
Assuming your 700 SS is a 7 Rem Mag it can be rechambered to an STW. Now,.. a lot of you guys will say it's not worth the extra powder in a 24" barrel, but I believe it is.A friend of mine has a 24" stainless 700 in STW with the goofy factory muzzle brake removed. It will turn up 3550 with a 139 Hornady. Now if that aint faster than your average 7 Rem Mag I don't know what is.I have a new unfired stainless barrel for mine when it goes, and it too may become an STW someday.Parker,..why not just seat your bullets out nearer the lands, the 700 has lots of mag length for the 7 Rem Mag.Just pretend it's a 7mm Weatherby with freebore and it'll surely pickup a few hundred feet per second.........

Sorry origional cal. is 7mm Rem. mag. Thanks for the input.
Parker, then this is an easy job. Just rechamber, and ensure your feeding works smoothly. That's exactly what I did with my 700 SS, which is how it ended up with a 24" barrel. I'm not saying it isn't faster then the 7 RM, it is. It's just not as fast as I thought it would be, and I think that with the bigger case, a longer barrel would get you those higher speeds. When I finally wear the barrel out on this one, the next will have a 26"-28" barrel. fWIW - Dan

I used to think the 7MM STW was a dumb cartridge too. Then customers started bringing their 7MM Rem Mags in to be rechambered. Ka-Ching!
Then a week or two later the same customers would bring their new 7 MM STW in for a muzzle brake. Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching! And sometimes a new Decellerator or Kick-eez pad. Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching!
In a year or so they will be back for a new Shilen or Krieger barrel. Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching! Ka-Ching!
So it suddenly occured to me that the 7 MM STW is a pretty good cartridge after all.

Craftsman, Well put. I resisted muzzle brakes for some time too and thereby ducked a lot of money because I thought they were ugly and noisy. After installing the first hundred they looked a lot better and the noise didn't bother me if I wasn't around. Regards, Bill.
The average 7mmstw with a 24" inch barrel wii have problems exceeding 3400fps with a 140 gr bullet at standard pressures. To get the most from them at least a 26" barrel is required.
