Why no true Mauser scaled for .223?
12 June 2007, 20:46
<slancey>Why no true Mauser scaled for .223?
I've always wanted a pure Mauser action scaled down for the .223 size case, but haven't found the right one.
I tried the Kimber 84. Sweet action, but smooth feeding was an issue, and the bolt stop was not true Mauser.
I have a Mini Mark X, but it doesn't have the claw extractor.
Am I the only one yearning for the real thing?
There was a scaled down Mauser action for the 222/223 cartridge available a number of years ago. I believe that Charles Daily, or some other importer sold it.
I see the rifles for sale occasionally.

If you find 2 of em I would sure like to have one !!!
I would really to build a rifle one of these in .223 !!!

Kiwi VinceWhat about the BRNO/CZ? Or is this not a true mauser action?
It has the claw extractor and sure looks like my larger mausers to me. You might need to custom make bottom metal to achieve the same look as a classic mauser sporter but that wouldnt be difficult.

jeffeossothe charles daly and the CZ are neither true mausers in the "mini" mauser action.
Why? no market, other than a few top enders.

AtkinsonTwo problems with your needs:
1. your out of luck.
2 Your gonna be out of money if you have one made.

I would love to have one also, I would even settle of a 250 Sav. in a K Mauser if I could get one for a decent price...
Maybe someday but not for now..I have to settle for a G33-40 and I picked one up last week...

dsitemanHello Ray,
A bit off topic, but I have a literal table top full of pristine VZ24's, couple very nice G33/40's and even a MS in super nice condition. As for the G33/40 what would you suggest as the ideal cartridge to build on the action?? Back to the topic, I would think the BRNO w/ the long claw extractor to be the closest thing to a true Mauser for the 223??

1894mk2For those with normal wallets the choice boils down to the mini mauser or a sako.
The mini mauser looks more mauser like but IMHO the sako is the better action. An AI or L461 is extremely pretty and perfectly suited to 222/223.

El DeguelloThe CZ 527 qualifies in most ways, but has that fool detachable single-stack box magazine sticking down in front of the trigger guard. I have one in 7.62X39mm, and it is just great in all respects except that magazine. Wish they'd put a true Mauser staggered-round internal non-detachable magazine on this action.
"Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."
Could a mini mauser bolt be modified to accept a claw extractor? The action looks like it already has the cut for it. You might be able to mill the fake one off. I dunno, just thinking out loud.
I'm having one put together, but never thought much about it having to have a claw extractor. Just is what it is.

Kiwi VinceI forgot the small Sako action.
Looking at my BRNO ZKW465's which are the forerunner of the CZ527 (1949, 1969 and 1972) they are front locking with 1 lug slotted just like a regular M98 and have a third rear locking lug. Long claw extractor and bolt release with blade extractor are pure Mauser.
Also they are CRF and with integral dowevetails does this not make it a square bridge?
Even got twin set triggers which are good to use and like many Germanic sporting rifles.
If you milled off the magazine well and custom made a magazine box and floorplate you would have a truly custom action in the traditional '98 style. The existing trigger guard could be reshaped and used.
Most M98 triggers also fit the small action.
Damn, you guys have me thinking about another project now!

seafire/B17GOne of the forum members, whom I shoot sage rats with, has a brother who comes along whom put one together..
He is a machinist and all he did was to extend the claw extractor via welding...
He prefers to use it as a single shot.. but it functions quite well.. I think it is on an Argentine or Mexican Mauser action...
He put a barrel on it from that had been chambered in 22 Hornet.. so it has a one in 16 twist.. but he shoots 40 grainers thru it just fine...
it is topped with a 6.5 x 20 Leupold...
maybe Clark will catch this thread and can post a picture of it...

vapodogI built one on a '98 but inserted a Savage bolt head on the Mauser bolt.....this renedered it a single shot and a pushfeed.....but it worked and was not beastly expensive...
To do it right would be a beastly expensive proposition.....

It was one of the Interarms Mark X actions. By today's standards, it was really a nice action. It is the same plant as the Chas. Daly/Zastava.
Find one if you can.

It is now the Remington 799.....
Mine is in 6 X 45 but it is a lot closer to being a Sako L-461 than a true Mauser.

Math was never one of my strong suits!! The proprietor's name is Butch. I used to have his phone number, but I have lost it. Call Area code 541-555-1212 and ask for Cascade Arms or Cascade Rifles in Maupin Oregon and they should be able to give you the number.

I'll give them a call. Thanks for the heads up!

J_Zolahello,
Cascade is closer to the older kimbers than a mauser. At least from what I have seen. The Firearms Guild in NJ had/or has a nice Cascade in 22 hornet.

I'd say that's because he's a former Kimber of Oregon employee.

Haven't met the old man, but I've played some pool with his son who claimed that he bought up a load of the casted Kimber receivers and has been slowly using those to build rifles off of ever since.
I'll have to talk to Brian and see what the deal is with his mini mauser situation though.....
Interesting none the less.

One of my hunting buddies has a Casade Arms 250 Savage rifle. It looks like a custom size action made specifically for that round, as a Winchester factory 100-grain load will just fit the magazine and feed. Nothing longer would work. It has some engraving, and a Mannlicher stock made of high-grade figured walnut. 19" barrel. A perfect little rifle! I have been told that one must be prepared to wait a lifetime for a Cascade, if indeed it is posssible to even obtain one in that length of time.
