Posted this in the big bore section first, but then thought it might be good to post hear

In the process of building a 404 on a classic mdl 70. Got the barrel and sights done. Started with a NIB 300 ultramag.

Just wondering what some of you did as far as feeding and or bottom metal. I've been thinking about Sunny-Hill or Blackburn. I have a English stock thats been turned for a dropbox, but haven't bought bottom metal yet.

Guess my questions for those that have built one, did your feed with out any modifcation in the factory stock. And the ones that went with new bottom metal what did you use and what magazine length did you go with. Also who worked the feeding etc.

Ray,

Got a question about mag box length, is 3.8 to long, Sunny-hill has one thats 3.8 long, didn't know if that was to long or not. I loaded three dummy bullets with 350gr woodleights, at the cantilure they are 3.53. I forgot to ask Blackburn about box length on the one they make.

I didn't think about calling Weisner but had planned to call Dennis and talk to him about making it feed.

This is the English blank that I had turned, not sure what to do with the gripcap, its not to my liking, to much teardrop for a gripcap more than likely. I should have understood the pattern better than I did. I have another english blank, but its not dry, will try to make this one work if I can. Other than the gripcap I like the pattern, its GAG's pattern.

I have always used Blackburn, but Weisner is supposed to be making a drop box for the 404 I think..that would be nice.

Dennis Olson, Plains Mt. can make about any gun feed and function properly...If you use the existing bottom metal it will need to be widened in the rear of the box to get a proper stagger and your capacity will only be two, perhaps 3 with some major tweeking....

A drop box will protrude below the wood line on your factory stock and look like crap, but it will work as far as shooting...

Go with the drop box and the English stock and you will have a quality rifle worth some big bucks if done properly..
