Where can I find an experienced gunsmith who can pull the factory 30-06 barrel and install and chamber a new barrel to 375 Whelen.
I would think that there may be some problems with the larger caliber bullets feeding through the action, so a gunsmith who has done it before would be helpful.

I don't believe that there will be any feeding problems with it so long as the overall length of the cartridge is correct.

Z-Hat Custom Guns works on the 1895 Winchester, including re-barreling and making converting it to a take down model. Thet also have their own line of Hawk cartridges based on the 30-06, including the 375 Hawk. Here's a link to their site:

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!

That got your attention didn't it, he-he!

Contact Dennis Olsen in Plains, Montana. He did the rebarreling of a new re-pro 95 to .35 Whelen for me and I swear, you can't tell it from a factory job. The bluing matches perfectly, fit and finish is absolutely top drawer, he dressed the trigger pull and installed a Lyman 66 sight as well. I will not use ANY OTHER 'smith than Olsen and trust me, I've tried a bunch. Cost was in the neighborhood of $500 for this job, but that included the new Douglas barrel, new front sight and his labor.

One more word of caution; my rifle in 35 whelen kicks like a bay mule and the hinged lever on the 95 has a tendency to pinch your middle finger and draw blood. This rifle in 375 will be a brute!

Hey Guys
Thank you I'll get to emailing the gunsmiths and see what I work out.

I've got a 375 in a bolt gun that is right enthusiastic in it's recoil with a 300 grain cast bullet. none of my experienced shooting pards are interested in shooting it more then once.

I'll toss in a vote for Zeglin. He converted my modern 1895 from a .270 to a 375 Hawk. Shoots great and feeds fine. It did need a thicker recoil pad to smooth out things.

My lever also has a bite on the inside front portion of the loop.

It's a lot of fun to take the '95 to the range, eject a shell and catch it in the air. Other shooters kind of look at you funny when you do that.
