Decelerator-how narrow?

I bought several Decelerator recoil pads several years ago for $5 a piece at a gunshop going out of business. Just couldn't pass that up! I have used the smaller ones up and am left with a couple Large size pads. They have the "F" dimension of 1.575" which is the width of the steel plate in the pad. I would like to put one on a stock that is 1.625" in width. Is that doable? Assuming I get lucky and I don't grind into the plate on either side, is .025" of plastic over the steel plate enough?

Is there any way to use the pads if I did grind into the plate?

I wouldn't do it.

I've done it several times.....one might think once would teach me a lesson.....well, it was a mistake every time I did it!

Ditto! Pissed me off everytime I did it. On top of that, if everthing is correct, you have to put the pad in the exact middle of the stock to even come close.

OK! Bad idea. What happens to the pad when you hit the plate? Does it come apart there?

I have one pad that is not in a package and apparently is not a Decelerator. It has the X pattern vent ribs and there is an open celled foam sandwiched inside the ends. I looked at Pachmayr's website and it might be a #990? It is only 1" thick though and the 990 is 1.5" thick. Must be a discontinued model. Hard to tell from the picture. It looks like it is a medium so it ought to work but it is still a lot bigger than it needs to be.

I looked at the website again. It looks like a medium T660 with a leather or stippled face-not the pigeon face they show on the website. The dimensions match the medium T660 so I will try that one. It has a 1.45" plate.

Marc,

Everyone who installs Pachmayr pads should have a set of these little numbers to use as a quick visual reference when choosing one size pad over another on a critically close fit.
