I've been offered a pre 64, pre war? M70. It has the old safety that you pull towrds you to fire. serial no. 239xx. It was rebarreled with a 243 barrel from another M70, D&T for those damn side mount scope too. The stock isnt chipped or even dinged badly, but the checkering is worn nearly smooth. He's asking $400, might get him down a little more, comments? I'm not a M 70 man, but it might make something nice rebarreled if it's worth it.

IMO it's worth the $400..... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Winston Churchill

Offer him $199. 243 is worthless

I'd probably take it for $400. But if he'll come down some, I'd definately take it.

Not sure how low a scope can be over that safety? Does it have a scope on it now so that you can tell? I really don't like side mounts and in particular on the M70's as it ruins them for me looks wise. I would only take it if I could shoot it first. If it shot very well then it's worth it. I took it for $350. The safety will clear a scope fine. I'll fill the side mount holes when I rebarrel it someday, it'll sit in the safe untill I figure out what to do with it untill then.

Take this from a MD70 collector at one time over 40 of them YOU WILL FIND NO BETTER WORKENSHIP THEN ON A PRE WAR 70 a gunsmith at Win and I mean a true gunsmith build that gun from start to finish. Even though it has a different barrel the action alone is still worth $300-$400 turn that gun into a shooter and don't screw with the safty it's not hard to get use to,just hold your thumb on it and flip it off, let me add many of the pre wars where not factory drilled on the side for a scope but for a receiver sight. My everyday deer and under shooter which has shot more then a 120 head of game is a pre war 70 #20xx in 270 I have been using this gun since 1969 when I bought it used for $80 right after meeting Jack O'Connor while deer hunting he gave me a box of his reloades which I still have.
