Hi Folks, Sorry I have been away so long. I have been awfully busy with work, school, trading cars etc. Anyway, I have recently picked up a nice 1970 vintage Winchester Model 100 in .243. It has a slight problem. The rifle will not eject either a fired case or a live round. After firing (single shot only) the bolt simply locks open. The brass has to be removed by sliding a knife blade under the edge of the rim. Its not hard to extract it simply slides out. I need input on this extraction problem. All of my reference material is for bolt guns and I can't find anything on the 100. Does anyone have any experience with this particular model/problem? Are replacement parts available for the M. 100? Does anyone have an exploded drawing of a Model 100 action?

I'm no 'smith, but it sounds like it's missing the extractor. If Winchester doesn't have parts, try GunPartsCorp or Jack First.

I think those extractors are a little sliding piece of metal with a spring loaded conical plunger, acting on a hole in the extractor, to provide tension. Anyway, If it is indeed like post '64 m-70s, as described above, it is probably rusty or gunked up. Remove the extractor. Clean it and the slot, reassemble, live happily ever after. To remove it get the bolt out of the rifle. Poke a pokie thing (small punch etc.) into the hole provided in the extractor, and depress the plunger. Slide or tap the extractor out of the slot. Put a rag over it to catch the spring and plunger, or you will loose it. It will fly out at consiterable velocity. Clean the extractor by rubbing it on fine sandpaper until the rust is gone. Clean the slot as best you can. Then, reassemble. Have fun.

I believe Winchester had some problems with this model. A friend of my stepfather's had one and he called Winchester and they sent him the replacement parts. I don't recall what the problem was, but it is worth a call to them to see if they can be of any help.

Folks, Thanks for the input. I have an entire new extractor assembly ordered (Bob's Gun Parts) and should be shooting again by the weekend. Good Shooting HBB

Hillbillybear, If I'm not mistaken Winchester recalled the 100 because some internal parts were not properly hardened or out of spec. I remember hunting with a friend many many years ago who had a win 100 in 308. I was over the hill and heard a flurry of shots, it sounded like a machine gun. When I got to the spot where the deer fell he said the gun went full auto. We fired two clips into a stump and it didn't happen again. The following summer we were with his father who was trying to wack a coyote and the gun went full auto again. It drove the scope into his forehead. His father wouldn't let us use it again. He sent it off to Winchester and they repaired the rifle free of charge. My grandfather also had one in 243 that never went auto but he sent it to Winchester for repair, also no charge. It is worth looking into. They are beautiful rifles though. Good luck with the project.

At one time, they would send you the replacement parts and $20.00 to have them installed I believe. I think the firing pin was a big part of the problem. [This message has been edited by DennisF (edited 08-22-2001).]
