Cleaning Action Lug Recesses

It seems that gauling can occur if the locking lugs and action recesses are not clean and lubricated.

I was concerned about this when allen day brought it up a way back and I made up some stuff and played with it.

Here is a link to Sinclairs site on the products below. The problem I had was getting the right material and Sinclairs felt seems cheap now at $4.50!

I am going to use a lube with an EP additive, moly and a synthetic base stock.

One gun writer I really despise is Rick Jamison, but he came up with a gimmick many years ago when I was still reading him. His suggestion was a half inch wood dowel. Drill a " hole about a half inch at one end perpendicular to the dowel. At any drugstore you can get dentist's cotton packing which is ". Put this into the hole in your dowel, run your dowel and packing into the recess as the last step in cleaning, rotate and clean your lug recess. It will also clean the ways in the action. The packages of the packing are cheap.

That's a much better idea than I came up with Bob. Thanks for the suggestion.

Bob,

I have an aluminum do-hickey (it is a technical term you see [Wink] ) that is the functional equivalent of your wooden rod. It uses the same cotton "dental bobs" as the cleaning agent. I acquired it so long ago I don't remember who built it.

I am always surprised at all the crud that comes out on the cotton. (CRUD is the acronym for "Chalk River Undetermined Deposits", by the way).

Midway has a tool for this very purpose, it works very well.

I saturate the bore mop and the swab with Brichwood Casey Gun Scrubber and it really cleans it. You must lubricate all areas thoroughly (especially if storing the rifle) after using Gun Scrubber because it will remove all oil/grease and leave you bare metal which is subject to rusting or galling if not lubricated.

Regards,

Terry

P.S.
Be sure and order a package of the swabs also, as the kit only comes with a few swabs.

A lower tech way (certainly works on a mauser) is to wiggle your rag clad pinky over it.

BTW I clean the chamber by taking a length of DIY wall anchor, splitting the last 2" with a knife and winding a bit of tissue around it. Works well and cheap.
