I just discovered that the pattern stock the duplicator I was planning use has too much drop at the heel for my tastes. I'm hoping someone can point me to a stock duplicator with a LR Mauser Mannlicher pattern suited for open sight use. Ideal drop at heel for me would be 1 1/4".

Your help is appreciated.

He pride's himself in getting them on the way back to customer within a week.
Last I had made was my wood, cost $40+ $10 UPS. He also has a good selection of blanks. I've never priced any from him, as I've always had my own wood.

He's the retired stock making inst. from the Trinidad Gunsmithing College, pent his whole carreer there, something over 37 yrs.

You won't get him to finish them, he only turns them and has about all the business he can handle. But, when there's more come in, he'll work extra hours so they are on the way back within a week.

you can't find anyone better, more reasonable, quicker, nor as knowledgible as Ed. Just ask D'Arcy Echols, one of his many students.

Does he offer rough inletting or just turning the stock?

Thanks,
Lance

Eddie does the rough out turning. Includes inletting close enough you can start the finish work.

Just explain fully what you want and you'll get it that way, only will be freshly turned wood with a rough finish.
A great many of the high priced stock makers send their blanks to him then they'll do the finish work. One time some years ago that's what he told me, something like 75% of his work come's from named/famous stock makers. They just want to save time and not have to mess with roughing them out and buying a ten thousand dollar machine and lot's and lot's of patterns.
A good portion of those guys went thru this school and Ed's classes, so they know him well.

He doesn't believe in computers. Kind of religeous and don't like all the porno crap and sales shit filling it up. So seldom even use's one. Much prefers to hand write a letter. He refused to provide his e'mail to me with this arguement. So I dropped it. Hell, I live within two hours drive of his place so it's not hard to make contact.

One time I'd taken a stock down on Tuesday, said he was coming to Pueblo the next Tuesday and could drop it off and save me $10 UPS. I wasn't in any hurry so agreed to meet him. Just happened on Thurs I got a forearm from a friend in Idaho and sent it to him Fri. He got it Mon morning and had turned that and brought both of them up to me on Tuesday. He used his wood on that piece at n/c.

Near as I can recall, he's turned about 9 for me and two others for other guys I've taken/sent.

He won't mess with anything he don't have a pattern for. IF he don't have it, you've got to provide one, or else get someone else to do it. I made the trip down to have him turn an over sized stock for a .72 cal b/p I'm trying to build. Didn't have a pattern and I didn't either. I'm still hung up at that point three years later.
So make damned sure he's got a pattern before you send/order something. Unless you have one that can be sent along with your wood.

Glue on a lable with your name, address, and instructions right on the blank. make your drawing and include the dimentions you want and it'll be close enough you can dress it down to that finished size.

I've only had "classic" style's made as that's my only interest. But, he's got them all, including thumbholes' which I would have for any price.

Best thing I can suggest is phone him during the day. They go to bed about 9pm. Figure 9am-7pm weekdays and you should be able to catch him. He'll probably be working and his wife will answer and go get him from the turning room. So be prepared to hold the line a minute or two.

Ed works full time everyday on turning stocks. This is his retirement job. Told me he puts in more hours doing this than he ever did teaching classes at the gunsmith school.

Mike,

Build your own pattern like you want it. If it were me I would get a copy of his pattern and change the drop. Then send it back to him.
