Folks,

I know this has been covered before, but I can't remember for the life of me.

What is the correct procedure and order for tighting the screws when reassembling a rifle action to the stock? Particularly for an M77 (tang safety) and pre64 M70.

Thanks!!

Hi, Steve

Don't know about the Ruger but I know pre64 Win70. The procedure goes like this :

screw the front action screw in, only snug

screw the tang action screw in, only snug

tighten the front action screw

tighten the tang action screw

the middle action screw is put in last and only snug, it should NEVER be tightened.

One more thing, remember to stomp the buttstock against the floor to "seat" the action into the stock. A Ruger M77 might not need that since the front screw sorta pull the metal and wood together.
