Where do you get the chemicals that dry the atmosphere in your gunsafe? I can't keep guns in my gunsafe unless they are very oily due to humidity. It is in the non air conditioned garage not the house and humidity is a real problem. Leftists are intellectually vacant, but there is no greater pleasure than tormenting the irrational.

You can order from Brownell's, what you need.

The problem with dessicants is that they need to be dried periodically to keep them working, once they have absorbed their limit, thats it. Your best bet is to get a Golden Rod or similar electric wand style heater. They warm and dry the air and create a slight positive pressure in your safe and are very effective. I also recommend that you get a backup desiccant pack to put in in case of electrical failure. DRSS(We Band of Bubba's Div.) N.R.A (Life) T.S.R.A (Life) D.S.C.

I've had a Goldenrod installed in my safe now for over 20 years. I thought it was a little expensive but its worked well in some very humid environments. I have a feeling that a 40-watt light bulb would do the same job and be cheaper too. Desiccants work well in sealed environments, for example, when the Air Force puts aircraft engines away for medium to long-term storage they have air-tight containers they throw desiccant bags into and then purge with Nitrogen. The sealed container doesn't let any additional water vapor into it and the desiccant soaks up whatever may be left in there after the purge. As others have already pointed out, desiccants need to be dried out after a time as they become saturated. If you're in and out of your safe often I don't think you’d like the desiccants. I would use a GoldenRod or other heating element. They raise the inside temperature of your safe slightly higher than the ambient temp thus preventing condensation, the cause of rust. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Thanks everyone! I think I wikk try a low wattage light bulb and some dessicant. My safe is air tight so to heat it above 110 degrees won't take much. Leftists are intellectually vacant, but there is no greater pleasure than tormenting the irrational.

e-bay - the flower driers have it cheap by the pound and it's color indicating, let's you know when it's saturated and to put it in the oven.

Cabelas has it also. I use an electric drying rod and 2 boxes of Silica gel. They do have to be "dried" in the oven about every 6 months or so.

Iended up putting a 4 watt night light in the safe and some "closet drier" I picked up at walmart. I alsoordered some dessicant from Brownell's before I found the closet drier stuff. Leftists are intellectually vacant, but there is no greater pleasure than tormenting the irrational.
