I have a Mark V 240 mag that I got from my Dad after he passed away. The finish on the stock now some "bubbling", and I wanted to refinish it, as well as replace the butt plate. I gave it to a friend of mine that does a lot of wood working to have him strip it. He tried, but none of the chemicals he had on hand would even touch the finish. He believes that this may be a epoxy type finish. Anyway, does anyone here know how I can get this stripped down? Or do I need to send it back to Weatherby and have them do it? | ||

if you can get ahold of some MEK, it usually strips epoxy, but its volatile stuff - use it outside | |||

JASCO Paint and Epoxy Remover, available at Hom Depot, will take it off--I konw this as I have used it several times on Weatherbys. John Farner If you haven't, please join the NRA! | |||

The Weatherby epoxy finish is famous for cracking in cold weather....I had the guys at Ahlmans in Morristown MN redo it for me on warranty and redo it in satin and they did a marvelous job.....NC Being from IOWA you might be close enough for them to do it and possibly under warranty.....this is just another in a long list of grievances Weatherby has ignored for so long! Give them a try! It was purchased ~ 1965. Would there still be a warranty on it? Thanks for the replies. I have some direction now that I didn't before. | |||

If there is no warranty and you have to strip it yourself you might try "gumout" carberator cleaner. Awhile back I cleaned a friends Remington semi auto that had gunk and greasy mud in the action, I thought "carb" cleaner was the answer and it was! That gunk just rolled out of that action in streaming gobs, unfortunately taking the stock finish with it, slick! | |||

Don't know about weatherbys (I avoid them when possible  ) but the only thing I found to remove the old remington "plastic" finish was Permatex Gasket Remover. I'd bet it would also work on the weatherby."You can lead a horticulture, ... but you can't make 'er think" Florida Gardener | |||

I have a friend with a Weatherby MY 5 on which the finish was pretty much shot. He asked me if I would refinish it for hi and I told him "sure, if you get the old finish off" He tried some strippers but no luck. He ended up using a heat gun and a scrapper and actually did a pretty fair job. Mind you, anything was an improvement over it's previous condition! If It Doesn't Feed, It's Junk. | |||

I went to Home depot and tried to find the JASCO Epoxy remover that Toomany Tools suggested. They only had a product from Klein. I bought that and the finish came right off. It was very easy, only took about 15 minutes. The only problem I found is that I didn't realize the white inserts that offset the fore end and the small knob on the bottom are plastic. The stripper ate the surface off a bit. After a bit of light sanding they seem to be okay. | |||
