What would be a reasonable price for a Pre 64, M-70 action already stripped of blue...

My opinion only but, Depending on the condition, between $350 and $450, action only.

Will depend if standard or the 300-375 H&H. For a standard the going rate out here complete with trigger and bottom metal has been in the 500.+ range. There are 2 on AA right now with 1 bid each at 575.00
Just yesterday a 375 H&H barrel on ebay sold for 898.88
With prices like this, I am thinking real hard about maybe diggin in the safe and parting a few out!!!!!!!!

Parting out a perfectly good pre-64 Model 70 on E-Bay, gunbroker, etc. should be a capital offense, or at least worthy of an amputation.

My opinion only.

Why should that be. When a person purchases an item they own it and are entitled to do with it as they please.

Why? I have parted out several, didn't sell them but they had ZIP collectors value because of condition and caliber. I did the gun a favor by making it up in a custom rifle.

I wouldn't chop one in excelllent condition or collectable, but there are a whole lot of pre 64's that can use help. They had shitty stocks from the factory and now 50 years later they aren't any better, soft black walnut with a BUTT ugly design because Winchester was being cheap. The last one I chopped the barrel was toast, didn't even make good scrap steel to play with on my lathe, badly eroded, with pits down the bore. My gunsmith still ribs me on how bad the condition was on the stock, the only good servicable part on the rifle was the action, which is what I bought it for.

they run $500 and up. Still one of the most desired actions to build upon.

Wow...

I picked up a '57 Super Grade (243 Win) in original (mildly worn) condition for $AU500.

Bore is mint, and it shoots sub - MOA...

Gee... if a pre '64 action is worth up to $US500, what's a complete rifle worth?

It appears that with the way the current market is going, that these pre-64's are worth more in parts than complete guns.
People are stipping these to bare actions, bolts, firing pins, springs and misc and they are getting way more out of it than a complete gun.
A standard floor plate only brought over 100.00, no trigger guard Confused killpc
I have a gun show this weekend and you can bet, I will be looking for donor pre-64's Big Grin

Just like trying to build a car with pieces from the parts store--the cumulative price of the individual pieces is far greater than the price of a whole car. But then, I couldn't buy a '57 Chevy at the dealer, could I?

Here in Canada, the standard actions will run about $450-550 CDN with factory H&H actions going for $700-900 CDN. I have a number of parts saved from genuinely thrashed rifles plus I had several actions which I sold recently.

I still have ten 70s in very choice shape and intend to keep these until I am an old geezer and can't shoot anymore. I get consistent sub-m.o.a. accuracy out of warmish Nosler Pt. loads in every one of my rifles, some will do a 1/2 m.o.a. frequently. I still consider these to be one of the finest production hunting rifles ever made and, for comparison, I own excellent examples of about eveything else, from pre-war Oberndorf sporters to Brno ZG-47s to Mannlicher-Schoenauers to a Dakota 76.

I would never part out one unless it was beat, but, will with those drilled and tapped for sidemounts with shot-out barrels and so forth. They make the best .338 Mags. and excellent .375 H&Hs as well. I think that they will continue to appreciate in value as long as shooters/hunters exist....a worrisome consideration.
