what does it take to convert a 7mm08 to 7mm08 AI? is there a need to remove the barrel from the action, or can it be done without doing so? what would the approximate cost of doing this be?

To do it properly the barrel needs to be removed set back and rechambered. $100-150+/-. If you simply run the AI reamer in without setback you risk having excess headspace with factory 7-08 in the AI chamber. I'm sure many have been done this way.

From experience the gain from an AI in an 08 based case is marginal at best. For my $$ I would load the 7-08 to 65,000 like the 6mm and be happy. Unless you simply want an AI.
