I own a Ruger M77 Hawkeye All-Weather rifle in 300 Win Mag. Is it possible to modify the magazine to accept a cartridge up to 3.6"?

I only want to change the magazine box length keeping everything else the same.

I loaded Barnes 175gr LRX BT approx .050″ off the lands as recommended by Barnes. The COAL was over 3.5".

I shot a 5 round group at 50 yards using Nosler brass, #215 primer and Rel26 at just over 3000 fps.

I just did this to my M77 Mk2 300 Win Mag. Lengthen the action opening to the rear, and fit a new magazine box to it. Modify the stock to fit the new box and you are good to go. The back of the new magazine box is right up against the middle trigger guard screw.

It now fits a 3.6" round with just enough room to cycle out of the mag.

How do they shoot when you load them to fit in your magazine?
I would try that before any modifications to your mag box.
I have a 375 H&H that I developed a load for using 300 grain Barnes bullets and it printed .625" for 5 shots but I found out was too long for the magazine.
I loaded up the same load to the maximum length to fit in my mag box and cycle.
It shot .75" for 5 shots.

I haven't tried loading them to fit my magazine. I'll do that in the next couple of days.

open the box and action in the rear and just a tad in front, the idea being to remove as little metal in the front of the action as possible..then recut the bolt stop to allow it to come back enough..Its a simple enough operation..

Some say removing metal on the feed ramp is dangerous, but as a matter of fact all Whitworth DG rifles are opened up totally in front, and I have never heard of them having any kind of a problem with the 375 or 458 win or Lott....Pretty much gunsmith bunk it appears!!??

Actually, it's the gunsmiths that keep opening them up. It's the modern arms manufacturers and engineers that seem to have a problem with it.

Over edumacated, paranoid, imbeciles all scared of a little blowing-upidness! LOL

When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years!
