I had the NECG Classic rear sight fitted to my rifle, initially because it just looks so classy but now I want to use the open sights. My front sight is an aftermarket Lyman banded sight. To match the rear and front sights I have to raise the blade/leaf on the rear sight. Sounds easy enough but the slotted screw on the NECG sight was horribly stripped as the pictures will show. That screw, it would seem, not only anchors/secures the island to the barrel but also keeps the adjustable blade in place as it seems to “overlap” the dovetails that slot the blade into the adjustable blade insert. Now I cannot raise the blade, nor can I remove the island from the barrel to ease the task of removing the screw. What to do?? https://imgur.com/a/KEkcl https://imgur.com/a/WKlTf

Its a mess Adam. I would be comfortable carefully center punching and drilling just deep enough to get the damaged screw head off if that would release it for disassembly. Take it to your smith. jc

That's odd. I had pretty much the same sight in here a few days back. On that one, you loosened the two facing screws on the blade and then used that screw that's all buggered on yours to move the sight blade up and down. After setting you had to lock it with the two facing screws on the blade. The torx or Allen head screw which is ahead holds and tightens the gibb which allows side to side movement. It looks like someone tried to adjust the up and down without loosening the facing screws. You should be able to loosen the gibb screw or take out the screw and gibb and then simply slide the whole top assembly out sideways with a nylon punch. I would just buy a new top end. Its going to be cheaper than removing the screw and making a new one. Or maybe it's a different sight. When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years! Rod Henrickson

Thank you Sir, it would seem that you worked on exactly the same sight. If I understand your suggestion correctly, I must loosen the gib screw and then remove the gib before I slide out the dovetail insert with a nylon punch. How do I remove the gib? Thanks again, Adam

Once you take out that screw the gibb should just fall out I would think. But once it's loose the sight should slide back and forth pretty freely. It shouldn't take much force at all. Just light taps should move it. From the look of things you are going to need a new sight blade anyway. Where the adjusting screw pushes it up and down appears to have been torn away. You have to loosen those two facing screws before trying to move the blade up and down adjusting screw and that apparently was not done prior to adjustment and that's why it got torn up. sight by Rod Henrickson, on Flickr When I was a kid. Call NECG and order a new top end if they will sell it to you. If not, I can't see the entire sight being worth more than $80 USD. I wouldn't drill out that screw and make a new one for less than $120 USD and I expect most of the US gun plumbers are in the same price range. Plus, you have a bunch of cosmetic damage to figure in. Yup, that's been done to death. You don't get a cookie for preforming that maneuver ! When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle.
