Have an offer on a Ruger 77 in 416 Rigby,as all the post I have read have stated this is a fine way to start off a DG rifle collection I will more than likely purchase it.Heres my question tho Who would you trust to install a "Scout Scope Mount". I want to get rid of the iron sight and go to the scout set up with a back up peep from Ashley, will also have the bolt body brought out just a tad.this is because I am Left handed.

Dave, it's a great rifle, and I hope you enjoy the hell out of it. That being said, most conventional scopes and mount will have a problem with the 416, period, much less a scout config. I would suggest to you that you buy a leupold 1.5x5, or a vx11 1x4, with tons of eye relief, and then have a backup ashley peep, that you can put on if there's an issue. I've shoot, an recently too, the ruger and the cz with their sights. they are great, and for the purpose, will nail anything to 200 yards. You could get a QD setup and have your sights, too. The bolt job is pretty straight forward. But, for the investment, I would start with a CZ jeffe

I am trying to stay away from the standard scope set up,due to shooting it left handed,I suppose I could just go with the peep and site in at 100 yards. The Ruger is to good to pass up and buying it returns some monies to the budget for 2005. I am buying it from a gentleman whos life I saved during a shoot out in his store a few years ago,I have told him and shown him whats it worth, but he is going to sell it to me for $450.US,so you can see why I don't want to pass

Buy it, sell it at a profit, then buy yourself a REAL lefthand rifle in .375 or bigger. You'll never be happy shooting a righthand rifle. George (a fellow lefty)

I second George. Buy the Ruger, sell at a profit, then get on the list for a LH Montana action, and build a nice LH 416 rifle.

Any idea how or when the Montana action will be out? Thanks for the replys, Any idea on what a "hunting rifle" nothing fancy would cost to build up? Can it be done for less than 2 grand? [ 09-18-2002, 22:57: Message edited by: Dave James ]

Dave, You interested in a LH Sako Finnbear in .375H&H? It's in excellent shape, with Redfield rings and bases and a Decelerator recoil pad. E-mail me if interested. George

George, sent you an e-mail,thanks As I told George I have turned down the Ruger, unles Mr.Mac will take the proper price for the rifle, took him to the largest gun shop here and had the owner tell him, after looking at it what it was worth.Been a cop to long I quess just will not screw over such a fine gentleman as him. I whish I could get him to use the computer, you guys and gals would love him,he hunted Africa in the early 40's until the war broke out and he was made a POW,he stayed after the war and hunted thru the 50's and 60's before moving to the states he is a true character

DAVE, Congratulations on both decisions. You will fare better with a true left handed action, especially when "it" hits the fan and you have some shells to shuck. As a retired Metropolitian Police officer, I am honored that you credit your profession with integrity. I am also the owner of a super accurate Ruger .416 Rigby and agree that it has alot going for it as well as several flaws that are correctable. Good luck on your search. Mims Reed of Hunters HQ has some left handed big bores in stock. He is a regular poster here and will give you a great deal on a "TUFF PAK" when you are ready to take that gun afar. All the best and stay safe on the mean streets. Regards, SAM
