I just bought the Dembart 18 LPI starter set and added an extra handle and a veiner. I got a quote from Ahlman's for a recut on my M70 and said I will buy the tools and do it myself. I have no regrets. It won't win a beauty contest but now I can hold onto the darn thing in the winter with gloves on! No practice, I just jumped right into it on a pre 64 Win 70 H&H Magnum stock. The biggest error I made was going to deep with the first direction of lines and ended up going back over the first direction after the second direction. The diamonds are sharp but not unifrom and there are a few crossovers but it does the job and I did it myself. Don't be afraid to keep and use those tools or for anyone else to buy them and give it a try!

I think they are 18 LPI. IS there some way to tell for certain?

The envelopes for the cutters would say 4-18, 2-18 etc. There should be a checkering gauge in there to measure the teeth as well.
