Howdy,

I have a Ruger #1 in 405 that is NIB. I am probably going to trade it but I thought I should ask a few questions first.

Can I rebarrel it to something that doesn't have the same case head? I want a varminter or a long range rifle. I was thinking 6mm BR or 243 with a #8 contour Hart and a Kepplinger single set trigger. I want it super heavy.

If I can't go smaller I want to go 338 Lapua as it will have enough that I can just get the extractor cut to fit.

I don't think there is any problem re-barreling it to any cartridge (within reason) you want. You can always order the extractor you want and the action is the same size whether it is a .22 Hornet or a .470 Nitro.

D99,
You can put most anything on there that will work withe the 1" shank, by simply matching the ejector to the case. The thing you might check on your project is the diameter of the barrel back in front of the reciever. You have to keep it small enough to clear the mainspring hanger as you install the new barrel. When viewing from the side you will see that the front of the hanger rises and follows the ruger barrel contour (roughly).
