So I picked up a Remington/Baikal MR221, which is the .30-06 sxs double. It's nice but, being the kind of person who can't leave anything alone I got to thinking about what I could do with it to make it unique. I thought about punching it out to the .30-06 AI, but then that's only a minor gain. So I got to thinking about the .300 H&H. The pressures aren't drastically different, SAAMI peak is 50k for the .30-06, 54k for the H&H. My biggest concern are the extractors. Would they be able to be resized to handle the larger base of the .300? So I'm looking for opinions. Are there any reasons I shouldn't think about doing this? Would it even work at all. I mean, the .30-06 is one of my favorite calibers, but if I'm going to have a double, I might as well have a little something more, right?

What about POI regulation? Regards, Joe __________________________ You can lead a human to logic but you can't make him think. NRA Life since 1976. God bless America!

i asked the same question on here quite a while back... consensus was that a 30r blaser would clean up the 30-06 chamber and would work.. http://forums.accuratereloadin...=535106876#535106876 go big or go home ........ DSC-- Life Member NRA--Life member DRSS--9.3x74 r Chapuis

Regulation is user adjustable via a jackscrew between the barrels. So the 30r Blaser huh? I just did a little research and it is nearly ballistically identical to the .30-06 AI (which is similar to .300 H&H loads with 180gr bullets), so I would be better off sticking with that. At least then I could still use factory .30-06 if I needed to. Components would also be much cheaper. Then it would just need sights, a trigger job, some stock work...

I wouldn't even consider it. First off, this isn't a bolt rifle. It's a double rifle with drop-down barrel action, and a cheap one at that. Also, it's built in Russia. It's proved to CIP standards, so SAAMI has nothing to do with it. It was proved to a max pressure of 4050 BAR/58,740 PSI - CIP .30-06 standard. A Baikal in .30-06 is the wrong platform in the wrong caliber to be trying to "improve" ballistics with. Sure, you can get a modest increase in velocity with the AI, but the loads that offer that are up around 65,000 PSI. I'd be going in the opposite direction - low pressure loads. Yes, the .30R Blaser only duplicates the ballistics of the .30-06 AI, but it does it at the same pressure as the standard .30-06. CIP MAPs for standard .30-06 Springfield and .30R Blaser are exactly the same - 4050 BAR. If someone just HAS to jakeleg one of these, that's the only option that's halfway sane, but it makes no economic sense at all given the tiny gain in performance in a cheaply made truck gun. ----------------------------------------- "Serious rifles have two barrels, everything else just burns gunpowder."

I would say NO. What could you possibly gain by a few more fps, and going to a calibre that is hard to find, not to mention will strain the gun? Save your money and buy more 30/06 ammo. Practice till you can hit something with it and take it hunting. If you NEED more power than a 30/06 get a 9,3x74R. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Thanx for the input guys, I have decided to put the kabash (sp?) on this one. I just don't think it would be worth it in the end. It would be neat, but not worth the effort. The .30-06 is a great round and I'm sure will do just fine.
Of course I don't NEED more than the .30-06, I live in the US.

Because of the larger rim diameter the bolt thrust would go up from 878 Lbs force to 1200 Lbs force Pi*Radius squared @ 50K PSI for 30.06 and 54K PSI for the 300 H&H.
