I recently acquired a new cz 550 American Safari in .416 Rigby. With great anticipation I mounted a 1.75-6 VX-III Leupold scope in Talley quick release 1" mounts. Upon first firing the weapon with 400 grain Norma factory ammo my windage was only a couple of clicks left. The elevation was totally different. It was about 14" low at 25 yards. My scope ran totally out of adjustment before bringing the impact up to the point of aim. A quick check of the scope revealed 200 1/4 clicks total which should equal 50" of elevation adjustment at 100 yards. Leupold specs call for 55" adjustment per their web site. Today I called Gary Turner at Talley Manufacturing and explained the problem to him. He suggested that I disassemble the mounts and measure thr distance from the mount mateing surface to the lower inside of the scope rings and compare front and rear ring measurements. The measurements are as follows: Front=.409 Rear=.411 I also checked the elevation of the two upper edges of the receiver surface with a steel ruler as a straight edge and they appear to be completely in plane. Gary voluntereed that he has seen several cz 550s in 416 that had the barrel screwed in crooked from the factory. My question is "Do you think that I have a scope problem, a mount problem or a rifle problem?" Any and all help will be appreciated. Jeff

I'm mailing your book tomorrow. Bore sight the rifle with the scope adjustments in the middle of their range. It should be close. "Bore sight" your rifle just using the receiver bridges (or open sights) of the rifle. The top of the bridges should be close to what you see thru the barrel. I find it difficult to belive the barrel is that crooked.

Bill, I'm glad you got the check. I look forward to reading the book. As you can probably tell I'm trying to get ready for a buffalo hunt in August. I regret that I did not shoot a target with the factory iron sights before I left the range. I bore sighted the rifle with a leupold bore sighter which I got with the scope and it appeared to be close before I fired it with the reticle close to the center of the adjustment. As the Talley mounting system is new to me, I thought they might be the problem but I don't think that small a variation will make such a huge difference. I tried to call CZ's service center(800-955-4486) but got a recording saying that they were closed today due to computer problems. I don't know what's going on. Hopefully someone on the forum will be able to help me. Thanks, Jeff

I don't know what is going on but you can bore-sight it out the kitchen window at home. iT IS NOT THAT PRECISE BUT WILL BE CLOSER THAN 20" AT 25 YDS.

Very interesting. I had the very same problem just the other day. I purchased a 602 Brno in 375 H&H a couple of weeks ago and mounted a Vari-x ll 2-7 with Lynx rings. The 602 is basically the same action as the new 550. I took it to the range the other day and found that I also ran out of vertical adjustment. With the scope adjusted to max. elevation it was still shooting 6" low at 100 yards. I have not had time to investigate what the problem might be, but will keep you posted when I find out. Hart

Hart, Thanks for the reply. Does your rifle have the screw in the under side of the stock fore arm approximately under the rear sight? If so please check to see if the barrel moves away from the stock when you loosen this screw. Mine moves noticeably , at least a 1/16 of an inch and I suspect that I have a bedding problem. The good news is that I talked with Mike at CZ-USA warranty department today and he advised that if I returned the rifle they would repair/replace as needed. I will ship rifle, scope and mounts tomorrow and ammo if they desire so that the rifle can be repaired and will shoot to point of aim at 100 yards with the scope in the middle of its adjustment. I don't know how this will turn out but at least we are off to a good start. I'll post the results when the rifle is returned. Jeff
