Scope slipping. tryed all the typical fixes

Please read this before posting!!

I have never had a problem with a scope slipping in properly lapped rings, from 223-416 rigby, but this one instance is puzzling me.

I have a 338 and a zeiss conquest 3-9x40. I have tryed DNZ mounts, warne, and talleys, but the scope will still slip under recoil I degreased the scope tube and rings, lapped the rings, and torqued them good. but it still slips and moves forward.

I'm at the conclusion that I NEED to put some type of adhesive on the rings to stop this, as 3 different scope mounts wouldn't hold it. I think it's the finish on the scope that isn't holding.

I have blue loctite. would that work?

Powdered rosin generally works quite well too.

I picked up some liquid electrical tape. I'm guessing just use it sparingly enough for it to squeeze out from the rings

Perhaps you're lapping too much!

One 1/2 width (of the scope rings) of electrical tape may assist- it will grip.

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

You can find Rosin bags at Big 5 sporting goods in the baseball section...

I've used paper shims...just about ANY kind but a strip of Postit sticky end works great and stays put...blue Loctite and green "after torque" Locktite...DON'T USE THE RED STUFF ON THE SCREWS...but I've used it on stubborn "slippers" as a LAST resort - only one small drop on the TOP ring as that way it is easy to stuff the whole scope in the freezer when you want to pop the rings off...clear fingernail polish on a paper shim...and of course the old standbys...electricians tape, friction tape, liquid tape, box tape or Scotch tape.

I've also milled a few thou off the bottom of the top ring mating surface to give a bit more grip on "surfaced/lapped" rings...running the ring top over oiled wet/dry (the grey stuff) sandpaper will lap the bases also just as well...switch ends and lap in a figure 8...clockwise then counterclockwise...just like lapping in some types of diesel injectors. Big Grin

Some scope bodies have such a hard, slick coating that hardly ANYTHING will stick to it.

When you really want something to stay put ,yet can be removed when needed ,try either of these tried and true performers .

A single drop of thread locker on a clean scope and ring has yet to fail and some have been mated for 30+ years . I trust it completely .

Readily available at any home center automotive parts outlet or decent hardware store . salute archer archer

Years ago when we had the gun shop.
Used everything under the sun.
A thin layer of Rosin was the best until the double sided tape started coming out.

But the BEST thing we found that was the cure all, was good old Mt. Staint Helens ASH.
After the May 1980 eruption us on the west side got about 1 inch of ash, and boy does that work well. Still have a small container of it to put on hard to remove barrels, as it really bites in.

This forum will be poorer upon your exit. We have a lot of knowledgeable guys around here, but when it comes to epoxies, your knowledge is heads and shoulders above the rest of us.

I have always relied on the fact that I could come here and get all the answers I need. You will be sorely missed.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.
