Excessive Headspace: I Am Bummed

I ordered three handpicked m98/22's from SOG. Two are beautiful, perfect bores, good crown's, and excellent headspace.

One is a dog. Someone carved their name in the stock a couple hunnert years ago, a couple of gouges here and there. 0% finish, no matching numbers. I can live with all that though. With trembling hands I disassembled the bolt and carefully inserted my no-go gage. Bolt handle dropped like the hammer of Thor. It swallowed the gage. It disappeared into a time warp. You get the drift.

Bummer big-time. I was quoted a minimum of $150 to set the barrel back one turn. I said if the lugs had been set back the recess should be lapped too. I was then told to take it somewhere else.

SOG has no more m98/22's. J&G sales does though. They advertise shooter grade and everything I have read on collector forums tells me it is a crap-shoot as to whether I'll get a shooter or a really nice rifle. Shipping is the problem. I would order two, spend $47.80 for postage and $40.00 for two transfers = $227.50 delivered into my hands.

Why did the third rifle have to be a dog? Why does this always happen to me?

You can send the gun back for a refund without an FFL as far as I know.

Or

Try the headspace again with a shim made from a clip of the side of an aluminum beverage can. That metal goes about .004". If it takes up the slack the headspace should still be functional.

Try some spare bolts. $150 is way too much to reheadspace an action, have it rebarreled before you do that.

I would form cases from 30/06 brass and size for 0 headspace and fire away.

It is not a good practice to make 8x57 cases out if 30/06. A 8x57 will chamber in some 30/06 rifles.
This is a guarnteed bomb. Not because of the oversize bullet, the neck will not be able to open and release the bullet.
Now don't say that everyone reads the head stamp before the load up. A lot of things dumber than that have happened.
To resize a case to fit a long chamber lightly oil the case. It will streatch evenly without the thining "line".
Good Luck!
