Could use a varmint round but not sure if I want to waste the controlled round feed when a push feed action would do fine. What rounds will fit in this short action? It's currently a .308 that shoots ok for hunting but doesn’t thrill me. I love .308 but I got that area covered pretty well w/other guns. Your thoughts…

okie johnA 22" 358 Winchester or a 350 Remington with a 4x Leupold would cover most game in North America that calls for a CRF action...

tdobeshI'll agree with okie john on the 358, if it's a standard bolt face I don't know that I'd personally want to mess with opening it up for a 350 Rem Mag althought that is a fine cartridge. You could also go 6.5 Rem Mag is you are willing to go to that trouble. If not others with a standard bolt face that would be rather nice would be the 7mm-08, 260 Rem., or if you don't mind a wildcat I think a 25 Souper would be just awsome in that little action!

For me, there would be no question about it. The .358 Winchester.

vapodogMy M-70 short action is now a .260 Remington.....and I like it....a superb hunting gun.

kutenayIf, I had it, my first choice would be a .338/.384 throated to seat heavier bullets out as far as possible. Such a light packin' rifle would do me for about everything that I want to hunt until I can't hunt any more. It would also be better for Grizzly encounters where I hunt than a smaller bore.

mark65x55Another vote for the 358win.

M1TankerFor me it would be the .308 Win. But the .260 would be a close second.

jeffeossodepends on what/how you hunt..
708 or 358 (i've built several of both) the ONLY advantage a 308 has over these is surplus ammo.
the 358, built around 7# with iron sights is a HOOT

tom ga hunter257 roberts, it makes a 2.9" round which is perfect for the roberts

Scota4570Pre-64?? If so build memories. I would leave it alone. Hard to make a Pre-64 FW "better".
Post-64........a sleek little 257 Roberts. Classic stock of english walnut with shadow line cheekpiece, , ebony forend tip, steel butplate, straight 4x Leupold, barrel of about the same weight and lenght as the FW barrel, generious checkering. : )~ Hmmm, or possibly a 7mm Mauser same length brass more versitility. Just make the spacer block a little smaller.

SodakhntrI would look at the 270 WSM.
I can't think of a better "Texas" deer cartridge.

boltmanI'd build a 257 Roberts. Take the spacer out of the back of the magazine and it'll handle a 3.1" round.

nyriflemanYet another vote for the .358 Win. However most of my shots here in the Adirondacks of NY are typically less than 100 yards. If I was building a SA for Texas or where longer shots are a possibility the .284 Winchester would be my choice. There is just something unpure about chambering a Win M-70 for either the 260 Rem or 7mm-08 Rem.

SodakhntrThe .284 is another nice choice.
For me the "perfect Texas deer rifle" has to deliver the trajectory and momentum for whatever distance you are capable/willing to shoot a deer but will also be the rifle you will have in your hands when the coyote/bobcat/javelina steps out at 400-500 yds.
Ted
another vote for the 257 Roberts...a perfect fit for that action.

fla3006I've toyed with the idea of a stainless/plastic new Model 70 in 308, stainless scope mounts, for lousy weather and adverse conditions.

Just pulling your leg here...
my two favorite winchesters i've ever had were in rem rounds...
7 rem and 416 rem....
But you gotta remember, 260 rem and 7-08 (and 243 for that matter) are all just CHILDREN of the 308 WINCHESTER!!!!

A 7X57 throated for 140 grainers, or a 6.5X55. In third place a 257 Roberts, although the 3.05" mag length is longer than necessary for it.
