What do you guys do to pass the time waiting for projects to come back from the smith? I jsut sent my first action out to be barreled last week, and the 12-14 week turn around is going to kill me. I know that a fair ammount of you have waited months and years for projects and I dont know how you do it

Well shucks, didn't you practice when you were a kid?

You know, when you finally saved up enough box tops to send in for the special super secret decoder ring. The one that said allow 8 to 12 weeks for delivery. And how you were cool the first day, but the second day you hurried out to the mailbox "just in case"?

If it didn't hurt to wait it wouldn't be so special when it got there. And here's hoping that your rifle is cooler than my decoder ring...

A lot of this while waiting......

Go to the range once a week.

Work up loads with new bullets and powder.

Refinish that old stock.

Watch the auction sights for nice blanks.

Try to figure out what chamber and barrel you want on your next project.

Right after you've finished the two you're working on.

Try to figure out how you're going to pay for it all.

And go to Reno.

start multiple projects, at different phases, in different arenas, and work them in each other's down time.

trusd me, it's WORSE when you do your own work, and you are waiting on PARTS to arrive, rather than someone else's to do their work....

waiting 10 weeks for a barrel SUCKS when you know it will take you less than 2 hours to install it, as you have already done all the action work you care to in the first week.... and you really can't finish the feeding work until you have the barrel....

and you can't finish inletting until you have the barrel on...

and you can't bed until you have the inletting done....

aqnd you can't get the bluing tanks hot until you've made darn certain the inletting and bedding it perfect

etc etc etc

I love the decoder ring analogy I guess I should find something else to work with while I wait. Anybody got a cheeep ticket to Africa, a double 470 and a 30 day license I can borrower while I wait. I promise to return the rifle in good order and have fun

It is even harder for the custom gunamker. Do you have any idea what kind of creative mind you need to keep coming up with new excuses for why the schedule slipped again and the client on the other end of the phone is SOL again this month!?!

I have always said the only person who can lie worse than a custom gunmaker (or engraver) is a taxidermist!!!

I just try and keep several balls in the air at once. That way every few days I get a package. Just like Christmas morning.

I asked that question thirty years a go. The waiting was unbearable.I decided to learn how to do it myself.

For me, it is not real hard because I am usually gone, out of town/state with my job for at least 7 month's per year. So, when I do get back home with the computer and phone service, I can get updates and usually pick up completed projects or at least see the progress.
The real key to this is to have several projects started throughout the year and have a few just sitting waiting to get started.

I think at this point I have 3 project guns waiting for me to decide what they will become.

My biggest problem is the pictures Forrest posts, His taste and my budget just don't mix well

Just make a blank stub up with a chamber and screw it in the action.... you can work on the feeding without the barrel.
Of course the hole can't go all the way through or the BAT men might frown.
