Winchester 70 barrel thread ?
Winchester 70 barrel thread ?
I have a left hand model 70 Classic awaiting a barrel from Shilen. They are pre-threading it and a local smith is barreling and cutting the chamber. Shilen sent me a letter yesterday asking which barrel thread I have, 28 tpi or 16 tpi. The original barrel is still on the rifle so no way to tell without pulling the barrel. The SN is G301XXXX. Am I looking at having my smith pull the barrel or can someone say for sure what the tpi is? Thanks.

D HumbargerThe M70s have a 1 in 16 TPI. That 1 in 28 sounds like muzzle brake threads.

airgun1I believe FN South Carolina M70's all have 28 TPI

The FNs are also larger diameter, I believe. Inch and a sixteenth or something...gets the threads out past the bolt lug raceway cut.
But I haven't pulled a SC barrel either.
Pre FN Model 70 CRPF WSSM actions are 1.0625" 28tpi.
Sounds like they increased the minor diameter of the thread to support the fat WSSM chambers.

airgun1This is true, hence my other post. I haven't taken one apart but some other gunsmith friends have and it appears FN just standardized them all.

Looks like I need to have my smith pull the barrel to be sure which thread it is. I called Winchester technical service and they refused to give out the information.

This is the best path to determine exactly what barrel threading your action requires.

D HumbargerI just barreled up two FN/ M70 NC actions this past week. They were 1" x 16 TPI.

My gunsmith got a chance to get the barrel off a couple of days ago. It is 16tpi. Shilen has been notified and now I play the waiting game. Is it here yet, is it here yet, is it here yet?
