I have rifle that has tin spacer spot welded to the lack of the magazine box. The spacer is taking up about .400 inch . This spacer is preventing me from taking advantage of the long throat/freebore in my rifle, unless I feed the cartridges one at a time but I do not want to do that. I can remove the spacer with the trusty Dremel, but if I do so will it mean that the magazine follower will need replacing with one .400 inch longer? Or will the existing follower be ok in the longer box? The bolt face would come all the way back to the rear of the opened up box so this should be a simple job, right? The rifle is a modern 8x57. Thanks for the input. ------------------ Richard

You can remove the spacer and regain the .400 in capacity. If it's Mauser Bottom metal, your follower should still work OK.If it doesn't get a new one from Brownells.Good Luck-Rob.

Wally - It is a Heym. Rob - Forgive my ignorance but am I correct to say the term "bottom metal" refers to box, follower and floorplate/trigger guard assembly? I had worried that without the spacer bracing/resting against the rear of the follower, the follower may wobble around on the spring and cause feed problems. ------------------ Richard

Can you simply build up the back of the follower? Maybe silver solder a piece of that .4" piece of metal to it?

Rob, Wally: I got home about an hour ago and took the rifle down to the Shootin Shack (garage). I stripped the rifle, drilled out the four spot welds holding the spacer in the box, and then reassembled the rifle. I then loaded up five empty neck sized cases with long Barnes X 200 grain bullets and set them with a COL of 3.230 that is about 50 thou back from the rifling, with the base of the bullet at the base of the case neck. They chamber beautifully. That is a whole .230 inch worth of powder space freed up. The whole job took me half an hour. Great job guys thanks for the advice. Cant wait to get this outfit on the range. ------------------ Richard

Good Job! Mausers are very forgiving!. I've used the same follower on a .243 built from an 8mm Turk with no problems. Thats part of why they are such a tremendous design! Yes Bottom metal on a Mauser is the mag box/trigger guard assembly.-Rob
