Been kicking this idea around for awhile.... I inherited a 1950 or so M99-R. That is the version with the rollmark on the side and factory D&T. The D&T allowed me to remove the buckhorn sight and install a Redfield reciever sight. Accuracy is much improved, for the first three shots anyway. I want to replace the OEM stocks with new wood. The old wood is pretty beat-up. I think long term storage is best for the original wood. Gunstocks inc has the correct buttstock and forearm set. That would be the pistol grip, shotgun style buttplate. However I want to add a slight custom touch to the stock. I would like to add an old school crescent buttplate, preferrably in brass, to the 99-R stock. Has anyone ever done this type of work on a M99? What type of crescent buttplate would fit? Oh Yeah...The disclaimer. I am not rebluing or altering any orginal parts. All original parts will be put in vacuum sealed containers and stored in a safe, temperature controlled environment and can be reinstalled at anytime to put the gun back in its orignal configuration. Thanks ZM

I recently installed a curved buttplate on a Winchester 94. What I needed to be careful about when ordering the plate was whether or not it was going to be big enough. In this case I put a fancy high-comb stock on it so the butt portion was much bigger than a normal stock. I had to use a Neidner plate and even then I had to bevel the edges and sort of fudge it a little bit. The plates from Brownells all have the measurements in the description, so measure the butt of the stock you are going to use and make sure you get a plate that will fit, but not be overly too big. -Spencer

I have stocked a lot of Savage 99s and the installation of a Neidner butt plate woueld alway be my choice, but a brass cresent is easy enough to do, but it would be out of place on a 99R IMO...I have a couple of old Savage buttplates with the Indian head on them, that would be more in line IMO....but to each his own, its your money. what good is a gun sealed in plastic? A crescent plate might be a bit out of place on this gun but it can be functional. You would be better off with steel however, such as those found on Winchchesters. Places you might go to look for one include: http://www.ballardrifles.com/Winchester%20Parts.htm Search also, www.trackofthewolf.com And also if you can find CPA's website they may have them also. I think George, at http://treebonecarving.com/ may have them. He may even have a carved blank for your 99 as well. Good guy by all reports.
